LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. --
Orchestrating a performance for the ages, the Christopher Newport women's cross country team pieced together a well-rounded effort while headlining CNU's appearance at the 10th Annual Border Battle, which was hosted by Rowan University at the Gloucester County DREAM Park on Saturday.

During the competition, four Captains eclipsed the 23-minute mark in the 6k while vaulting up the program's all-time performance list. Headlining the historic showcase, Sarah Dake placed 20th while throwing down a time of 22:08.9, which marked the fourth-fastest clocking in school lore. It also was the top time by a Captain since longtime legends Logan Funk and Kaitlyn Ardrey both eclipsed 22 minutes during the 2021 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Following Dake, Courtney Mudd moved to 14th on the program's all-time performance list with a 22:37.8 mark, while Kayla Lopez jumped to 17th after finishing in 22:45.6. Rounding out the history-makers, Sarah Bland capped off the historic assault with a time of 22:58.8, which bumped her to 21st on the all-time charts.

Putting their performance into perspective, Dake, Mudd, Lopez, and Bland became the first foursome to top the 23-minute barrier in the same meet over a full 6k course in 11 years. The last group to accomplish the feat was former standouts Logan Harrington, Lydia Cromwell, Julie Machamer, Briana Stewart, Emmie Schmitt, and Hannah Bullen, who all eclipsed the mark during the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Championships at Rappahannock Academy. Just three weeks after their performance at the league meet, that crew carried CNU to the program's first team appearance at the NCAA Championships.

Along with the top-four runners on Saturday, Josie Brumfield completed the course in 24:15.1, while Didi Dasilva shaved 44 seconds off her PR with a 24:23.5 clocking. Rounding out the team's top-seven, freshman Lauren Ryan led the first-year competitors with a 24:25.6 effort.

Overall, the women finished sixth out of 31 teams during the star-studded meet after accumulating a score of 259.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Christopher Newport came in 12th out of 35 teams while notching 417 points. Two Captains parked themselves in the top-60, while three of the squad's top-seven performers established new course PRs.

Leading CNU in the 8k, Andrew Janetsky came in 14th overall with a time of 25:06.5, which sliced 45 seconds off his performance at last year's competition. Moments later, Clayton Rankin crossed the line in 56th with a mark of 25:53.0.

Following the front-runners, Evan Young set a new course PR by 30 seconds after completing the event in 26:36.9, while Tom Foti was up next in 26:56.9. Rounding out the top-seven, Kevin Farnsworth clocked in at 26:58.7, Luke Tompkins wrapped up in 27:19.3, and Taylor Dalton ended in 27:35.5. Meanwhile, among the squad's first-year competitors, both Myles Hendler-Voss (28:59.4) and Kaiden Brewer (29:26.0) added new personal-bests in the 8k.

Along with CNU's performance in the championship races, two women also netted PRs in the open 6k. Millie Weinhold finished 23rd in the race with a time of 25:23.7, while Alaina Kim added a personal-best in 26:12.9, which placed her 49th overall.

Christopher Newport will return to action on November 1 when the Captains travel to Sunnyvale, California for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
