BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Headlining an impressive effort by the Christopher Newport cross country teams, 11 Captains established new course PRs while shining at the 51st Annual Paul Short Run, which was hosted on Friday afternoon by Lehigh University at the Goodman Cross Country Course.
Squaring off against some of the top student-athletes in the nation, CNU picked up a slew of elite efforts during the competition. Headlining the action,
Sarah Dake and
Sarah Bland made history in the 6k. Competing in the White Division, Dake clocked in at 22:27.4, which placed her 65th in the field. It also was the 11th-fastest mark in school history and chipped two seconds off her adjusted PR of 22:29.1, which she just set last week at the Don Cathcart Invitational.
Along with Dake, Bland vaulted to 24th on Christopher Newport's all-time 6k performance list. The second-year standout finished in 23:07.8, which set a new personal-best by 19 seconds.
In addition to the team's top-two runners, four other women set new course PRs in the White Division. Returning to the prestigious competition for the first time since 2023,
Kayla Lopez trounced her previous work at the meet after crossing in 23:41.2. That bested her old standard by over two minutes.
Rounding out the crew,
Courtney Mudd completed the race in 24:00.4,
Josie Brumfield was up next in 24:06.0, and
Lena Blagg finished in 24:42.4. All three of those times marked at least a 15-second improvement over their work at last year's meet.
Overall, CNU finished 30th in the White Division while collecting 840 points. They accomplished that despite facing a field that included 40 regionally-ranked squads and 14 nationally-ranked foes.
Meanwhile, in the White 8k, the men also competed against a field featuring 40 regionally-ranked programs and 11 squads listed in the latest national poll. Holding their own against the top-flight competition, the Captains came in 37th overall after amassing 1,002 points. Leading the way,
Andrew Janetsky was 73rd with a time of 25:30.7, which cut over a minute off his time from last year's meet.
Along with Janetsky, CNU's next two runners also set new course PRs.
Clayton Rankin clocked in at 26:25.5, while
Luke Tompkins crossed in 26:48.9. Rounding out the team's top-five,
Taylor Dalton was up next in 27:28.1, and
Tom Foti wrapped up the race in 27:53.2.
Among other veterans,
Luca Hinton sliced 12 seconds off his course PR after finishing in 28:19.4, and
Evan Young polished off the meet in 28:49.0.
Meanwhile, in the Open races held earlier in the day,
Katherine Streeter led the women in the 6k with a time of 24:46.4, while
Didi Dasilva eclipsed her old course PR by a full minute after throwing down a 25:13.2 mark. Additionally, a pair of freshmen set new personal-best times.
Katelyn White clocked in at 26:07.2, and
Alaina Kim followed in 26:55.4.
On the men's side,
TJ Brown and
Kaiden Brewer both set new personal-best marks in the 8k after finishing in 27:47.2 and 29:33.6, respectively.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 18 when the Captains travel to Logan Township, New Jersey for the Inter-Regional Border Battle, which will be hosted by Rowan University at the Gloucester County DREAM Park.
