Eight Captains Secure VaSID All-State Indoor Track & Field Accolades; Latrell Fomby Named Men's Field Athlete of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After starring throughout the winter campaign, eight members of the Christopher Newport track & field teams earned All-State honors, while Latrell Fomby was recognized as the Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Friday afternoon.

Headlining the award-winners, Fomby became the first Captain in school history to be named the Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Fittingly, he also hauled in first-team All-State accolades, as did Leo Brennan, who was celebrated for his work in the jumps. Rounding out the men's honorees, Seth Morris and Colin Sliwa were both second-team selections in the throwing events.

For the women, Ellie Nuckols led the way as the second-year star garnered first-team nods in both the jumps and pentathlon. She became just the second standout in program history to earn top plaudits in a pair of individual events in the same season, joining former legend Alyssa Roach, who was also honored in the jumps and pentathlon in 2023.

Along with Nuckols, Sydney Trussell was a first-team selection in the sprints, and Katie Stevens hauled in her third straight first-team citation in the throws. Ashley Eley also garnered second-team nods in the jumps.

Piecing together an incredible senior campaign, Fomby rewrote the record books throughout the winter season. In the shot put, he unleashed a 16.12-meter heave at the South Region Final Qualifier, which broke the previous school standard by over 10 inches. Meanwhile, in the weight throw, he set a new program mark with an 18.07-meter toss at the same meet. Additionally, he won the conference title in the weight throw with a 16.89-meter launch at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships in February.

For his work during the indoor season, Fomby hauled in All-Conference and All-Region accolades in both the shot put and weight throw. He also finished the year ranked first in the South Region in both events. Additionally, he was slotted 28th nationally in the shot put and 30th in the weight throw.

Honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet for his work at the title competition, Brennan swept the league crowns in both the long jump and triple jump. Establishing PRs in both events during the championship meet, he landed a distance of 6.76 meters in the long jump while adding a 13.72-meter showcase in the triple jump. He eventually earned first-team All-League plaudits in both events while securing an All-Region citation in the long jump.

Winning her second straight conference title in the triple jump, Eley reaffirmed her position as one of the finest field athletes in the region. During the league meet, the second-year sensation posted a distance of 11.47 meters, which established a new personal-best, placed her 35th in the nation, and marked the top showing by a Captain since 2003. For that performance, she stockpiled All-Conference and All-Region accolades. Along with her work in the triple jump, she also secured All-League nods in the 60-hurdles.

Starring in the shot put throughout his sophomore season, Morris dominated the competition during the indoor campaign. In his very first appearance of the year, he uncorked a 15.85-meter heave. That ranked in the top-50 nationally and placed him second in the entire South Region. Later in the winter, he added another victory in the event at the Captains Invitational before finishing third in both the shot put and weight throw at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in February.

Flashing her versatility throughout the indoor season, Nuckols hauled in All-Region honors in both the pentathlon and long jump. Her score of 3,308 in the pentathlon at the South Region Final Qualifier was the 28th-best score in the nation and marked the sixth-highest total in program history. She also ranked first in Virginia in the long jump with a 5.43-meter distance at the league championships. Shining at the title meet, she eventually earned All-Conference nods in the long jump and 400 while placing first in the 60-hurdles.

Making his mark in the weight throw, Sliwa was one of the region's top performers throughout the indoor season. He established a new personal-best in the event at the Patriot Games after uncorking a 17.12-meter toss, which marked the fourth-longest throw in school history and earned him All-South Region accolades. He also posted four victories in the event during the winter campaign and secured an All-Conference citation after placing second at the league championships with a 16.37-meter distance.

One of the most decorated throwers in CNU history, Stevens hauled in her third career All-American award after finishing 16th in the weight throw at the NCAA Championships in March. Meanwhile, she set a new school and conference record in the event with a 17.80-meter mark at the South Region Final Qualifier. That also was the top effort in the region and the 16th-best throw in the country. Additionally, she claimed her third straight league crown in both the weight throw and shot put and was named the Field Athlete of the Meet for that showcase.

Lighting up the track as one of the top sprinters in the region, Trussell was a dominant force throughout her senior campaign. Torching the competition at the league championships, she swept both the 200 and 400 at the conference meet. Her times of 25.76 in the 200 and 59.08 in the 400 both ranked second among all sprinters in Virginia while placing her in the top-10 in the South Region. She also added a third All-League citation after helping the 4x400-relay place second at the conference championships as well.
