CHESTER, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will make another push to qualify individuals for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships when the Captains take part in the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday at George A. Hansell Track in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Along with an appearance at Widener, CNU will also take part in the Mount Union Final Qualifier & Combined Events beginning on Wednesday in Alliance, Ohio. That will serve as the squad's final tune-up before the NCAA Championships, which begin on May 22 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Once the nation's last remaining qualifiers wrap up on Thursday evening, the country's top-22 declared student-athletes in every individual event will earn a spot at the national competition. A final list of the meet's participants will be published on the NCAA's official website by 8 p.m. on Friday.
So far, reigning All-American
Katie Stevens stands 17th in the women's discus (45.41 meters) and 23rd in the hammer (52.25 meters).
Tyler Palmer also sits just outside of the top-22 in the men's shot put. The senior standout currently ranks 25th on the national charts after uncorking a 16.33-meter heave at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships earlier this month.
In other throwing events on the men's side,
Latrell Fomby is 28th in the discus (50.12 meters) and 44th in the hammer (54.66 meters). Meanwhile,
Colin Sliwa is 32nd in the hammer (56.90 meters), and
Seth Morris sits 49th in the shot put (15.70 meters).
Additionally, on the women's side, sophomore
Ellie Nuckols ranks in the top-50 in a pair of disciplines. She is 33rd in the heptathlon (4,310 points) and 47th in the long jump (5.65 meters).
Along with the nationally-ranked competitors, 24 total Captains are entered in at least one event at the Widener Final Qualifier. Many of those are looking to build upon outstanding efforts at the league championships. Stevens won individual titles in the shot put, discus, and hammer, while Nuckols swept the 100- and 400-hurdles. For the men, Palmer brought home his second straight conference crown in the shot put, and Sliwa completed a CNU sweep in the hammer.
In addition to the champions, some of Christopher Newport's other participants in Monday's meet hauled in All-Conference nods for their efforts this spring.
Ashley Eley was celebrated in the high jump and triple jump, while Morris and
Rylee Ehrett were recognized in the hammer.
Leo Brennan also earned an All-League citation in the triple jump, and
Daniel Young did the same in the shot put.
Trending in the right direction, four other Captains will be taking part in races on Monday after setting PRs in those events at the league meet.
Marshall Mattison established himself as the team's top performer in the 100 (10.83) and 200 (22.28), while Kevin Farnswroth notched CNU's fastest clocking of the year in the 800 (1:57.01) last weekend. Additionally,
Jahi Jemison threw down a personal-best in the 400-hurdles (58.44), and
Luke Tompkins was equally impressive in the 1500 (4:02.11).
