ALLIANCE, Ohio --
Leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams on the opening day of the Mount Union Final Qualifier, three Captains pieced together impressive efforts on the first day of the combined events while kicking off the last regular season meet of the year, which began on Wednesday afternoon at Kehres Stadium.

Headlining the action, Ellie Nuckols and Ashley Eley orchestrated a slew of personal-best performances in the heptathlon. Leading the way, Nuckols won the 200 in 26.02, which established a new PR. She also set her personal standard in both the 100-hurdles (15.09) and shot put (9.87 meters) while placing second in both disciplines. Meanwhile, she eclipsed 1.44 meters in the high jump and finished the day with 2,701 points. That total currently ranks second in the field.

Equally impressive, Eley established a pair of PRs as well. She completed the 100-hurdles in 15.76 before adding an 8.66-meter toss in the shot put. Additionally, she placed third in the high jump after topping 1.50 meters and finished fifth in the 200 with a 28.19 clocking. Overall, she wrapped up the day slotted fifth in the heptathlon with 2,423 points.

On the men's side, Jahi Jemison took part in the first five events of the decathlon. In the 100, he notched a new PR and placed second in the race with a time of 11.23. Later, he threw down another personal-best mark of 52.78 in the 400.

In field events, Jemison eclipsed 1.69 meters in the high jump, landed a 5.97-meter distance in the long jump, and launched a 9.31-meter missile in the shot put. He eventually finished the afternoon ranked fifth in the field with 3,061 points.

Along with the stars in the combined events, two Captains took part in the hammer throw on Wednesday. Colin Sliwa placed second in the men's event with a 54.46-meter toss, while Katie Stevens was sixth on the women's side with a 50.23-meter effort.

Christopher Newport will return to action tomorrow for the final day of the meet. The heptathlon and decathlon resume at 10 a.m., while other individual events begin two hours later.
