NEW ORLEANS -- After starring in the throws and combined events throughout the spring, the Christopher Newport track & field teams stockpiled All-Region accolades as 10 Captains garnered recognition from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday afternoon.
Headlining the decorated contingent, six different standouts earned All-Region nods in at least one throwing event. On the men's side,
Latrell Fomby picked up three awards, while
Seth Morris,
Tyler Palmer,
Colin Sliwa, and
Daniel Young garnered one apiece. Meanwhile, for the women,
Katie Stevens was honored in the discus and hammer.
Ellie Nuckols also secured a pair of citations in the long jump and heptathlon. Additionally,
Ashley Eley joined her in the heptathlon, while
Jahi Jemison and
Max Taylor rounded out the honorees in the decathlon.
Hauling in three awards for his work in the spring, Fomby led the South Region in the discus after uncorking a 51.55-meter heave at the Widener Final Qualifier. That also earned him a spot at the NCAA Championships, which will take place later this week. Meanwhile, he slotted third in the area in the hammer (54.66 meters) and fifth in the shot put (15.19 meters).
Along with Fomby, three other standouts earned an All-Region award in the men's shot put. Palmer ranked first in the South with a 16.33-meter missile while winning the league title at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Morris also finished the spring slotted second in the event (15.70 meters), while Young rounded out the top-three (15.56 meters).
In other throwing events, Sliwa was second in the region in the hammer after setting a new school record with a 56.90-meter toss at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic. Meanwhile, for the women, Stevens ranked first in the South in both the discus (45.41 meters) and hammer (52.56 meters). She will take part in both events at the national competition later this week.
In addition to the throwers, Christopher Newport dominated the combined events. Nuckols was third in the heptathlon (4,401 points), while Eley was fourth (3,653). Nuckols also ranked second in the long jump with a 5.65-meter distance at the league championships. On the men's side, Jemison was fourth in the decathlon (5,160), and Taylor slotted fifth (5,081).
