LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Several Captains vaulted up the national charts as the Christopher Newport track & field teams capped off the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic with an outstanding showcase on Saturday at Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field and Dr. Jack M. Toms Track.
During the final day of the competition,
Colin Sliwa broke his own school record while winning the hammer throw with a 56.90-meter toss. That moved him to 10th on the NCAA leaderboard this year. Meanwhile,
Latrell Fomby also topped the previous program standard with a 54.66-meter heave. With that effort, he climbed into the top-30 nationally and jumped to second on CNU's all-time performance list.
Along with his work in the hammer, Fomby also won the discus with a 50.12-meter launch. That marked the third-longest throw in CNU history and the eighth-best toss in the NCAA this year.
Equally impressive on the women's side,
Katie Stevens posted a pair of victories. She jumped into the top-15 nationally in the discus with a 43.95-meter missile before adding an 11.56-meter effort in the shot put.
On the track,
Sydney Trussell and
Ellie Nuckols both climbed into the top-40 on the NCAA charts. In the 200, Trussell established a new personal-best after clocking in at 24.94. That marked the fastest time by a Captain in over 15 years. Meanwhile, Nuckols completed the 400-hurdles in 1:05.43. That ranks first in the league and 39th in the nation in 2025.
In other track events, Nuckols placed fifth in the 400 (58.48),
Ashley Eley was eighth in the 100-hurdles (17.04), and
Adalyn Perez led the Captains with a time of 2:22.78 in the 800. Additionally, in field disciplines,
D'yan Robinson came in fourth in the triple jump (10.68 meters), while
MK Harper-Louis eclipsed 1.45 meters in the high jump. That placed her seventh in the field.
For the men,
Marshall Mattison,
Ben Hager,
John Laser, and
Matt Ryan came in fourth in the 4x100-relay after finishing in 42.68. Ryan also added team-best times in the 200 (22.71) and 400 (50.28), while Mattison completed the 100 in 11.29.
Over longer distances,
Evan Young wrapped up the 800 in 1:57.67, while
Jason Sangiuliano threw down a mark of 10:45.74 in the 3000-steeplechase. In the hurdles,
Darrin Gallegos-Perches capped off the 100-meter discipline in 16.48, while
Jahi Jemison finished the 400-version in 59.55.
In field events,
Daniel Young led CNU with a third-place finish in the shot put (14.81 meters), and
Leo Brennan was eighth in the triple jump (13.07 meters).
Christopher Newport will return to action on April 18 with the start of the New Captains Classic at TowneBank Stadium.
