Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Stockpiling victories during another well-rounded showcase, the Christopher Newport track & field teams pieced together a series of starring efforts while wrapping up the New Captains Classic on Saturday at TowneBank Stadium.
During the final day of the competition, eight different Captains won an event, while several others improved their marks on the program's all-time performance lists.
Leading the way,
Ellie Nuckols capped off a fantastic weekend in the heptathlon. Making her debut in the combined event, she compiled a score of 4,141, which marked the fourth-highest in school history. It also vaulted her into the top-25 on the national charts this season.
After winning three of the first four disciplines on Friday, the first-year phenom added two more victories on Saturday. Nuckols took the long jump with a 5.17-meter leap before winning the 800 in 2:27.75. She also added a mark of 18.53 meters in the javelin to round out her historic weekend.
Along with Nuckols,
Katie Stevens set a new PR in the discus with a 43.69-meter launch. That stands as the second-longest heave by a Captain, just 10 inches shy of matching Sarah Johnson's school record of 43.94 meters. Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Latrell Fomby added the school's 10th-longest toss in the discus (44.01 meters), while
Daniel Young did the same in the shot put (14.62 meters).
In other field events,
CJ Reeders won the triple jump (14.39 meters), while
Wade Dunkelberger captured the high jump (1.92 meters).
Lily Knowles also snatched the women's pole vault after eclipsing 2.76 meters, which just edged out teammate
Elizabeth Lacombe, who placed second with a 2.61-meter clearance.
On the track,
Daniel Fox won the 100 (10.83) and placed second in the 200 (22.01). He also ran the anchor leg on CNU's top-two relays. In the 4x100, he teamed up with Reeders,
Marshall Mattison, and
Eli Wilson on a time of 42.48 before joining forces with
John Laser,
Michael Jones, and
Luke Tompkins on a 3:30.37 clocking in the 4x400.
Sydney Trussell was equally busy on the women's side, including a win in the 200 (25.80). She also was fourth in the 100 (12.64) and ran the anchor leg on the 4x100-relay. On that foursome, she combined with Lacombe,
Ainsley Miller, and
Jessica Hendricks, on a 53.84 clocking.
Rounding out Saturday's victors,
Daniel Ferrante captured the 1500 in 3:57.36, while
Evan Young took the 3000-steeplechase in 9:52.18. In other events for the men, Reeders was fourth in the long jump (6.37 meters), Wilson was fifth in the 400 (50.81), and Tompkins was sixth in the 800 (1:58.63).
Logan Pena-Bandalo also added the squad's top efforts in both hurdles after finishing the 110- in 17.33 and the 400- in 1:02.07.
For the women,
Kayla Lopez was the runner-up in the 3000 (11:10.78), Hendricks was second in the high jump (1.39 meters), and
Alex Guzman was fourth in both the long jump (4.81 meters) and triple jump (10.34 meters). Hendricks also came in sixth in the 400 (1:03.35),
Sarah Dake matched that finish in the 1500 (5:22.43), and
Annabelle Dreher placed fifth in the shot put (10.08 meters).
Didi Dasilva also led the squad in the 800 with a time of 2:27.56.
"Obviously, it was a very strong debut in the heptathlon for Ellie - very consistent with her execution throughout the weekend," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "We had a few events where we made some big dents in the Conference Lists as they stood heading into the weekend. We have a really big challenge ahead of us at the Championships, especially coming off of Finals, so we are going to need yet another big step forward in a couple weeks."
Christopher Newport will open up the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships on May 3 at Salisbury.
