NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing her assault on the history books,
Katie Stevens established a new school and conference record in the hammer throw while starring for the Christopher Newport track & field program on Saturday afternoon during the Blue & Silver Challenge at TowneBank Stadium.
Headlining a historic afternoon by the CNU throwers, Stevens starred in the hammer. On her third attempt, she unleashed a 52.82-meter heave. That shattered her previous program standard of 49.72 meters, which she set during last year's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships. It also broke one of the oldest records in league history.
Stevens' throw on Saturday bested the previous conference mark of 51.35 meters, which was set by Goucher's Natalie Williams in 2004. That had been the fourth-oldest record in the league history books.
In addition to her work in the hammer, Stevens also established a new PR in the discus with a 41.30-meter launch, which marked the third-longest throw in school lore. Additionally, she led CNU with an 11.81-meter toss in the shot put and a 28.26-meter effort in the javelin.
Meanwhile, a pair of Captains added their names to the history books in the men's hammer.
Latrell Fomby jumped to sixth on the all-time charts with a 48.41-meter showcase, while
Colin Sliwa climbed to seventh with a 48.37-meter performance.
In other field events,
Ainsley Miller netted a PR in the pole vault. She eclipsed 3.20 meters, which equaled the sixth-highest clearance in school history.
Several other standouts also walked away with victories on Saturday. For the women,
Alex Guzman took the triple jump with a 10.99-meter leap, while
Ellie Nuckols claimed the 100-hurdles after crossing in 15.76.
On the men's side,
Seth Morris continued a strong afternoon by the throwers with a win in the shot put (14.51 meters), while
Mikael Gessesse snatched the triple jump with a 13.26-meter performance. On the track, five Captains walked away with victories.
Daniel Fox finished the 100 in 10.90,
Johnny Atienza completed the 800 in 1:59.99,
Daniel Ferrante wrapped up the 1500 in 3:59.32,
Tom Foti concluded the 5000 in 16:09.33, and

David Keroack was fourth in the 400 (52.20). Rounding out the top performers on the men's side,
Ben Varner notched a 41.97-meter throw in the discus,
Bradshaw Morrison posted a 45.94-meter distance in the javelin, and
Lemuel Avery added a 6.13-meter mark in the long jump.
For the women,
Sydney Trussell was the runner-up in the 100 (12.57),
Jessica Hendricks placed third in the 400 (1:04.40), and
Kayla Lopez added a top-10 showing in the 1500 (5:09.34).
Ashley Eley also contributed a pair of third-place finishes in both the high jump (1.50 meters) and long jump (5.12 meters).
"The coaches and I were really pleased with the team's performances," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose student-athletes registered 41 PRs during the meet. "This is always a tough weekend on our schedule since we host/work our High School Captains Classic the night before and morning of our meet. The team handled the work and transition into competition mode quite well, as the performances show, and that bodes really well for the season ahead."
Christopher Newport will return to action next week with an appearance at the Colonial Relays, which open on April 4 in Williamsburg.
