Historic Efforts Abound as CNU Track & Field Shines at South Region Final Qualifier

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport track & field teams put together a series of historic efforts at the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday at Shenandoah's James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics Center.

Continuing to rewrite the record books in the women's weight throw, Katie Stevens broke her own school and conference standard in the event. During the competition, she unleashed a 17.56-meter heave, which added a half-inch to her previous record of 17.55 meters set last week at the CNU Final Qualifier.

Wade Dunkelberger also posted the third-best clearance in the men's high jump after eclipsing 2.05 meters. That marked the top effort by a Captain since CNU Hall of Famer Richard Roethel cleared 2.11 meters in 2014.

In other events on the men's side, Daniel Fox won the 60 in 6.87. That established a new PR and moved him to fifth on the school's all-time performance list. It also was the school's top clocking in 29 years.

Meanwhile, in the 3000, Daniel Ferrante and Evan Young both added all-time marks. Ferrante won the race in 8:36.20, which moved him to sixth in school history. Just a split second later, Young crossed the line in 8:36.68. That bumped him to seventh on the program's charts.

Rounding out the historic performers, Ellie Nuckols was fantastic in the pentathlon. During the combined event, she recorded a score of 3,016. That placed her seventh on the program's historic list and marked the second-finest effort by a freshman. It trailed only former All-American Jennifer Westerholm's score of 3,154 on February 25, 2013.

Showcasing her versatility, Nuckols completed the 60-hurdles in 9.49 and the 800 in 2:28.21. In field events, she cleared 1.39 meters in the high jump, fired a 9.09-meter heave in the shot put, and landed a distance of 4.85 meters in the long jump.

Among other competitors on the women's side, Ainsley Miller finished fifth in the long jump (4.87 meters) and sixth in the pole vault (3.01 meters), while Sydney Trussell came in fourth in the 200 (25.92) and sixth in the 60 (7.99). Alex Guzman also set a new personal-best in the triple jump (11.01 meters), and Stevens rounded out her busy schedule with a second-place showing in the shot put (13.15 meters).

For the men, Eli Wilson won the 400 in 51.17, and CJ Reeders captured the triple jump with a 14.29-meter distance. In throwing events, Dante Ntiganzwa came in second in the weight throw (17.77 meters), and Tyler Palmer was the runner-up in the shot put (14.75 meters).

In addition to his historic work in the 60, Fox also placed second in the 200 with a time of 22.55.

Christopher Newport will now await word on potential bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will begin on March 8 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The final list of meet participants will be posted on the NCAA's official website by 7 p.m. on Sunday.
