WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Three Captains jumped into the top-five in school history in their respective events while leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams to a historic showing at the Williams Final Qualifier on Wednesday evening at the Weston Athletic Complex.
In the men's pole vault,
Jack Armel won the meet with a 4.67-meter clearance. That marks the second-best showing in program history, falling just shy of Jonathan Graham's 4.85-meter effort in 2017.
Along with Armel, two throwers added their names to the history books. In the shot put,
Tyler Palmer took first-place with a 15.62-meter launch, which was the third-best heave in school history and the finest mark since 2018. Meanwhile,
Dante Ntiganzwa became just the third Captain to eclipse 50 meters in the hammer throw. The third-year star posted a 50.67-meter toss, which ranks third on the program's all-time performance list.
In addition to the historic efforts,
Nick Thomas and
Katie Stevens both walked away with a pair of titles. For the men, Thomas captured the long jump (6.54 meters) and triple jump (12.95). On the women's side, Stevens was the victor in the discus (40.12 meters) and hammer (47.49).
Christopher Newport also notched two wins on the track.
Alyssa Roach won the women's 100-hurdles (15.50), while
Perry Spring ran away with the men's 400 (50.79).
Rounding out the men's top performers,
Gustavo Leitao was the runner-up in the 400-hurdles (55.77), and
Daniel Ferrante came in second in the 800 (1:55.86). For the women,
Adrianna DeSantis was third in the 200 (25.67),
Mae Savoie matched that finish in the 800 (2:23.61), and Roach wrapped up her day with a third-place effort in the long jump (5.52 meters).
The Captains will return to action on Thursday at the MIT Final Qualifier in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
