NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams starred at their home meet as the Captains won 24 events while dominating the Blue & Silver Challenge on Saturday at TowneBank Stadium.
During the competition, Christopher Newport posted a pair of historic efforts in women's field events.
Katie Stevens won the discus with a 37.70-meter toss, which ranks eighth in program history. Meanwhile,
Ainsley Miller matched the eighth-best clearance in the pole vault after topping 3.05 meters. Additionally,
Avery Mangels just missed the top-10 in the event after eclipsing 2.90 meters. That equals the 11th-best mark by a Captain.
On the men's side,
Daniel Fox led the way after finishing the 200 in 21.73, which places him eighth on the program's all-time performance list. He also won the 100 in 10.73 and teamed up with
CJ Reeders,
Perry Spring, and
Gage Elliott on a victory in the 4x100-relay after finishing in 42.51.
"Between typically varying weather conditions and hosting a high school invitational, which was run by our squad, this was a physically and mentally tough meet," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "These are both known challenges, and the team did a good job of preparing themselves. Three All-Time performances, 34 Team PRs, some really strong relay splits, promising debuts, and a handful of near-misses is quite a body of work for this time of the season and under these circumstances. We want a lot more out of them, and efforts like we had this weekend will make that happen."
Along with Fox on the men's side, the Captains stockpiled victories on the track.
Luke Tompkins won the 800 (2:03.63),
John Vogel captured the 1500 (4:04.80), and
Jason Sangiuliano finished first in the 3000-steeplechase (10:49.49). Not to be outdone, Christopher Newport's field standouts also collected six victories.
Leading the way,
Jack Armel walked away with wins in both the pole vault (4.45 meters) and javelin (43.67 meters). In other throwing events,
Tyler Palmer took the shot put with a 13.37-meter toss, and
Latrell Fomby captured the hammer with a 41.30-meter launch.
Rounding out the winners on the men's side,
Wade Dunkelberger took the high jump in 1.90 meters, and
Gage Elliott snatched the long jump with a 6.46-meter distance.
The women also starred in a variety of disciplines. Kicking off the weekend,
Michelle Valcich ran away with the 10,000 on Friday evening after crossing the line in 41:26.55. In other distance events on Saturday,
Mae Savoie won the 1500 (4:58.89),
Megan Smith captured the 5000 (20:36.68), and
Lex McGrail crossed the line first in the 3000-steeplechase (12:57.37).
Rounding out the track standouts, Christopher Newport was equally impressive in the shorter distances.
Lindsey Stirling won the 100 (13.27),
Sydney Trussell took the 200 (25.34),
Adrianna DeSantis was victorious in the 400 (1:01.02), and

Eleanor Eungard also teamed up on a win in the 4x100-relay after completing the circuit in 42.51.
In field events, Stevens also claimed the hammer with a 42.20-meter effort, while
Alyssa Roach won the high jump with a 1.49-meter clearance.
Christopher Newport will return to action on March 30 when the Captains open up The Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.
