VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up a busy week of action with several historic efforts in field events during the Richard Drake Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Headlining the action,
Katie Stevens won the women's weight throw with a 14.74-meter toss. That not only established a new PR, but it also marked the third-best effort in school history. Additionally, it stands as the finest throw in the league this year, topping the second-best mark by over 12 feet.
Along with Stevens,
Avery Mangels moved to ninth in program history in the women's pole vault after eclipsing 3.05 meters. With that performance, she became the first league competitor to top 10 feet this year. Later in the meet,
CJ Reeders landed a distance of 14.39 meters in the men's triple jump. That ranks eighth in school history and places him among the top-15 nationally this year.
In addition to their historic efforts, Reeders also led the Captains with a 6.33-meter showing in the long jump, while Stevens uncorked a 10.89-meter launch in the shot put.
Among other field stars on Sunday,
Logan Bishop was second in the men's pole vault (3.60 meters),
Latrell Fomby finished fourth in the weight throw (14.12 meters),
Ethan Anderson was fifth in the high jump (1.85 meters), and
Tyler Palmer came in fifth in the shot put (13.93 meters). On the women's side,
Alex Guzman continued an electric freshman campaign with team-leading marks in the long jump (4.36 meters) and triple jump (9.85 meters).
On the track,
Cooper Albright was the runner-up in the men's 800 after crossing the line in 1:58.50, while the women also shined in the mid-distance races.
Eliza Dana was third in the 800 (2:27.69), and
Mae Savoie matched that finish in the mile (5:27.92). Additionally,
Luke Tompkins was fourth in the men's mile (4:30.57), and Jason Sanguiliano was fifth in the men's 3000 (9:28.93).
Allyson Castle also led a slew of top-10 performances in the women's 3000 after coming in seventh in 11:45.32.
Over shorter distances on the women's side,
Alyssa Roach was fourth in the 60-hurdles (9.15),
Sydney Trussell was sixth in the 60 (7.88), and
Ainsley Miller came in 10th in the 400 (1:05.36).
Eleanor Eungard also notched a PR in the 200 with a mark of 28.68.
For the men,
Gustavo Leitao came in seventh in the 60-hurdles (9.10), while
Javi Haworth was 10th in the 60 (7.26) and 13th in the 200 (23.48).
John Laser also led the Captains in the 400 after wrapping up the race in 52.22. Laser, Albright, Tompkins, and
Perry Spring finished fifth in the 4x400-relay as well. The foursome concluded the event in 3:29.31.
Christopher Newport will continue the season on February 11 at the Kenneth Giles Invitational in Virginia Beach.
