Sydney Trussell Makes League History in the Women's 200 at the Blue Marlin Invitational on Saturday

Final Results

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --
Adding her name to the history books, Sydney Trussell matched the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record in the indoor 200 while leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams to a stellar showing at the Blue Marlin Invitational on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Headlining the competition, Trussell completed the 200 in 25.59, which equaled the fastest clocking in league history. It tied the mark set by Frostburg State's Kayla Truesdel on February 17, 2018 during the league championship at the Freeman Center.

In addition to placing her name among league legends, Trussell's clocking on Saturday also marked the third-fastest in program history and the top effort by a Captain since 2003.

Along with Trussell's work in the women's 200, Daniel Fox and Jack Armel starred on the men's side. Fox threw down a time of 22.18 in the 200, which marked the sixth-fastest clocking in school history. Meanwhile, in the pole vault, Armel equaled the 10th-best clearance by a Captain while matching his PR with a 4.40-meter showcase.

"It was a good day today," said head coach Tyler Wingard. "We posted 32 PRs, which was over half of our opportunities. There were lots of really good - competitive - efforts throughout the day, so there's a lot to build on going forward."

In the throwing events, the men packed the top of the leaderboard on Saturday. Leading the way, Daniel Young won the shot put with a 13.47-meter toss, while Tyler Palmer (12.61 meters) and Dante Ntiganzwa (12.47) rounded out the top-three. Later, in the weight throw, Latrell Fomby took first with a 14.60-meter launch, while Ntiganzwa came in second (13.72).

In other field events, Ethan Anderson was fourth in the high jump (1.82 meters), CJ Reeders came in seventh in the long jump (6.44 meters), and Brandon Peterson matched that finish in the triple jump (12.51 meters).

On the women's side, Katie Stevens collected a pair of top-10 finishes in the throwing events. The sophomore star was fifth in the weight throw (14.13 meters) and eighth in the shot put (11.40 meters). Alex Guzman also led the Captains in two events after landing a distance of 4.58 meters in the long jump and 10.00 meters in the triple jump.

Rounding out the squad's top performers in field events, Avery Mangels came in fifth in the pole vault with a 2.90-meter height, while Alyssa Roach topped 1.45 meters in the high jump, which placed her sixth in the field.

On the track, Roach came in seventh in the 60-hurdles (9.18) and teamed up with Trussell, Adrianna DeSantis, and Casey Yenyo on a sixth-place showing in the 4x400-relay (4:16.21). Earlier, DeSantis also came in fifth in the 400 with a time of 59.64, while Trussell added a mark of 7.99 in the 60.

Over longer distances, Libby Miles paced the Captains in the mile with a 5:40.87 clocking, and Eliza Dana completed the 3000 in 10:59.27.

For the men, Luke Tompkins starred in the 800 with a fifth-place performance (1:59.25), while Jason Sangiuliano equaled that finish in the 3000 (9:48.17). Among other top-10 performers, Taylor Dalton was seventh in the mile (4:35.27), and Cooper Albright was 10th in the 400 (52.30). Albright also joined forces with Perry Spring, Gage Elliott, and Leo Brennan on a fifth-place effort in the 4x400-relay after the foursome completed the event in 3:31.85.

Additionally, Reeders recorded the team's top time in the 60 with a 7.41 clocking, while Gustavo Leitao wrapped up the 60-hurdles in 9.17.

Christopher Newport will return to action next week with the Patriot Games on Friday in Fairfax, Virginia and the Vince Brown Invitational on Sunday at the Freeman Center.
