SALISBURY, Md. -- Sam Koltisko ran away with the men's 10,000 crown, while
Joe Kilama climbed the all-time charts in the hammer as the Christopher Newport track & field teams kicked off the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships with a solid showcase on Friday at the SU Track & Field Complex.
Â
Snatching the program's first title of the competition, Koltisko made his debut in the 10,000 and quickly topped the field with a time of 34:20.62. That marked his second career conference championship after previously winning the indoor 5,000 during the 2020 meet.
Â
Putting his accomplishments into perspective, the second-year star is just the third runner in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference history to win both the indoor 5,000 and the outdoor 10,000 in a single career. Â With his second title, he joined legendary Mary Washington standout Jeff Gibson and York All-American Tim Hartung as the only men to claim both crowns.
Â
In addition to Koltisko, Kilama jumped to sixth on the program's all-time performance list in the hammer after unloading a 46.42-meter toss on Friday. That effort also placed him second at the meet and earned him All-Conference plaudits.
Â
Among other scorers on the men's side,
Eric Speeney came in fourth in the 10,000 with a time of 34:54.26, while
Amir Siders was fifth in the hammer with a 38.21-meter throw.
Â
The women also saw a pair of runners score in the 10,000.
Maggie Ralston led the Captains with a third-place finish in 41:15.60.
Erin Sanza was close behind after crossing in 41:39.87. That placed her sixth in the field.
Â
Rounding out the squad's top performers on Friday,
Mazie Clark also posted Christopher Newport's finest effort in the women's hammer after finishing eighth with a 31.77-meter performance.
Â
The Captains will return to action tomorrow with the final day of the outdoor championships. Salisbury will continue to provide a video stream and live results at SUSeaGulls.com.
