NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Jack Armel and
Riley Park both registered personal-bests in the heptathlon, while
Lauryn Helstrom climbed the all-time charts in the women's high jump to headline Christopher Newport's efforts on the final day of the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
Â
In the heptathlon, Armel won the event with 3,880 points, which ranks sixth on the program's all-time performance list and marks the top effort in the South / Southeast Region this year. Meanwhile, Park also climbed to eighth in school history with 3,790 points in the combined event. That total places him second in the region this season.
"It is no easy task to follow up a very emotional high like the Conference Championships with another high quality meet, so the team's performances this weekend were especially impressive," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose student-athletes came away with 36 PRs during the competition. "The Women's Mile, Men's 800m and 200m, and the Combined Event freshmen all showcased really good clusters of performances that carried last week's momentum forward. We will take just a small group up to Tufts Qualifier next week, while the rest of the group gets a chance to regroup and get ready for a big outdoor season."
