Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field squads returned to the top of the conference as the Captains swept both team titles during a dominant performance on the final day of the Capital Athletic Conference Championships at the Freeman Center.
On the second day of the competition, five individuals and a relay team walked away with championships as the Captains dominated Saturday's action. Overall, the men registered 146 points, which out-distanced runner-up Mary Washington by 13. The women claimed the title with a score of 127, topping York (Pa.)'s second-place total of 106.
"The team took the challenge today and really competed well," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, who saw his student-athletes register 45 PRs during the two-day competition. "It was great energy and well-earned titles for both the men and women."
Headlining Saturday's action,
Jason Putnam ran away with a pair of individual crowns. The senior captured the mile in 4:25.49 before taking the 3000 in 8:43.03. On the women's side,
Monica Lannen and
Alyssa Roach also walked away with two titles. Lannen won the 800 in 2:23.22, while Roach took the 60-hurdles in 9.03. Later, the two came back and joined forces with
Adrianna DeSantis and
Mae Savoie on a victorious effort in the 4x400-relay. Together, the foursome finished the event in 4:10.83.
Also claiming titles on Saturday,
Allan Pedin and
CJ Reeders won a pair of men's field events. Pedin topped 4.25 meters in the pole vault, and Reeders landed a 13.85-meter effort in the triple jump.
In addition to the victorious Captains, plenty of other student-athletes secured All-Conference nods for their work on Saturday. Along with her showcase on the relay unit, DeSantis finished second in both the 200 (27.14) and 400 (1:00.72). Meanwhile, over longer distances,
Ryan Henderson was a second-place finisher in the men's mile (4:29.66), Lannen was the runner-up in the women's mile (5:22.41), and
Kaitlyn Ardrey matched those finishes in the women's 3000 (10:46.43).
Rounding out the All-League performers,
Riley Park was second in the men's high jump after eclipsing 1.87 meters, and the men's 4x400-relay also added a runner-up performance. During the race,
Perry Spring,
Carter Giles,
Cooper Albright, and
Adam Wosahla teamed up for a time of 3:28.98.
Among other star-studded performances on the men's side,
Adam Wosahla paced four point-scorers in the 800 after finishing third in 1:55.72. The Captains also collected points from three competitors in the 60-hurdles, headlined by
Philip Burrell's third-place clocking (9.18).
Amir Siders was also third in the shot put (13.47 meters),
Jack Armel was third in the pole vault (4.15 meters), and Giles added a third-place showing in the 400 (51.74).
The women also flooded the top of the leaderboard in a variety of disciplines. In field events,
Lauryn Helstrom was fourth in the triple jump (10.13 meters), and
Mazie Clark placed third in the shot put (11.50 meters). On the track,
Kaitlyn Ardrey,
Lindsey Stirling, and
Shannon Woods all added third-place finishes. Ardrey completed the mile in 5:23.95, Stirling clocked in at 8.25 in the 60, and
Shannon Woods finished the 800 in 2:27.19.
Christopher Newport will return to action next week when the Captains host the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events beginning on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
