Four Captains Earn All-American Nods; Men’s Team Places 8th at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

Final Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --
Putting together a tremendous performance, four Captains collected All-American honors, while the Christopher Newport men's track & field squad placed eighth in the final team standings to wrap up the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

During the final day of action, Jeff Dover headlined CNU's efforts after earning All-American nods in both the mile and 3000. Also helping out on the men's side, Cullen Monahan and Ryan Scott secured national recognition as well. Guided by those efforts, the men finished with 19 points, which placed the squad eighth in the country. That marked the team's first podium finish since the men tied for third at the 1998 indoor title meet.

Along with the men, Hannah Shoemaker starred on the women's side and secured All-American plaudits in the shot put.

On Saturday, Dover became the first Captain to earn national recognition in both the men's mile and 3000. Kicking things off, he placed second in the mile after crossing the line in 4:10.85. His runner-up performance marked the top finish by a CNU athlete in a distance event in program history. Hours later, he returned to the track and threw down a school-record time of 8:20.46 in the 3000, which placed him sixth in the field.

Equally strong in the 800, Monahan continued an outstanding day by the distance runners. After setting a new school record in the event during the prelims on Friday, the senior came back with a mark of 1:52.67 on Saturday. That placed him third in the NCAA, less than a second behind the eventual national champion.

Wrapping up the men's performances, Scott collected his second straight All-American award in the indoor 200 after finishing seventh with a time of 22.05. That came on the heels of a 21.95 clocking during the prelims, which marked the second-fastest time ever registered by a Captain.

On the women's side, Shoemaker made some history in the shot put. The senior unleashed a 14.09-meter toss, which placed her sixth in the nation. With that performance, she became just the third Captain in program history to top 14 meters in the shot put, joining former national champions Claudia Stanley and Rachael Clark.

Overall, the All-American award is the second for Shoemaker, who was previously celebrated for her efforts during the 2017 outdoor campaign. Meanwhile, Scott is now a four-time All-American, and Monahan is a two-time selection. Rounding out the group, Dover is now a five-time All-American, including four in track & field. He has already been celebrated three times during the 2017-18 campaign after earning recognition for his work during the cross country season as well.
