BOSTON -- Continuing a record-breaking week for the Christopher Newport track & field program,
Cavanaugh McGaw established a new standard in the 800 with a terrific effort on the final day of the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
In the 800, McGaw registered a time of 1:52.88, which eclipsed the previous program standard of 1:53.00 set by Matt Winkler in 2011. It also eclipsed the Capital Athletic Conference mark of 1:53.14, which was established by Salisbury's Thomas Burke in 2015.
Along with setting a new school and conference benchmark, McGaw's clocking also ranks among the top-10 nationally this year.
Joining McGaw in the 800,
Cullen Monahan finished the race in 1:56.55. Meanwhile, in other distance events,
Sam Murch posted a time of 8:37.63 in the 3000,
Billy Rabil finished the mile in 4:22.65, and
Grayson Reid rounded out the group with a 14:51.54 clocking in the 5000.
Saturday's performance wraps up a meet that also included a record-setting performance by the distance medley relay on Friday. Together, Rabil, Monahan, McGaw, and
Brandon Berry finished the event in 9:58.96. That sliced over two seconds off the previous school and conference record of 10:01.65, which was set in 2016.
The Captains will return to action on Friday when CNU kicks off the Capital Athletic Conference Championships at the Freeman Center.
