GENEVA, Ohio -- Jeff Dover broke the school and conference record in the 1500, while
Brendon Burrows registered a top-10 effort in the men's discus to highlight a well-balanced effort by the Christopher Newport track & field teams on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Â
In the prelims of the 1500, Dover punched his ticket to the finals with a record-setting run. During the event, he cruised to a time of 3:49.81, which topped the previous school standard of 3:50.42 set by Dan Pittman in 1985. The 1500 mark was the third-oldest men's track & field record at CNU before Dover added his name to the top of the list.
Â
Along with Dover,
Zach Campbell also qualified for the finals of the 1500 after crossing the line in 3:50.90. That clocking marked the sixth-fastest time in the prelims, earning him a place alongside Dover in the finals, which will take place on Saturday at 12:35 p.m.
Â
Meanwhile, in field events, Burrows starred in the discus. Unleashing a 46.42-meter throw, he placed ninth in the nation, falling just shy of All-American status. Overall, his ninth-place finish stands as the second-best in program history. William Sanderlin is CNU's only other top-10 performer in the men's discus after he placed seventh during the 1988 outdoor championships.
Â
In addition to Burrows,
Legend Boyesen came in 20th in the discus with a 38.79-meter effort.
Â
Also adding the finishing touches on their 2017 campaigns,
Grayson Reid came in 19th in the 10,000 after crossing the line in 31:56.49, while
Logan Harrington placed 21st in the women's 1500 with a 4:45.50 clocking. Additionally,
Ryan Scott finished 16th in the 200 in 21.96. The junior speedster will return to the track for the prelims of the 110-hurdles on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Â
Rounding out Thursday's competitors,
Briana Sutton finished off the first day of the heptathlon in ninth place with 2,689 points. During the combined event, the senior notched the second-best throw in the shot put with an 11.48-meter toss. She also tied for eighth in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters and posted times of 15.72 in the 100-hurdles and 27.95 in the 200.
