NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Briana Sutton established a new program record in the javelin and added an all-time effort in the high jump to headline an impressive performance by the Christopher Newport track & field teams during the Commonwealth Duals on Saturday afternoon at POMOCO Stadium.
Â
Coming off of her third straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Nationals earlier this month, Sutton kicked off the outdoor season with a tremendous effort on Saturday. Her finest performance came in the javelin as she unleashed a 38.62-meter heave, which far out-distanced her fellow competitors and broke Anette Glasser's previous school record of 38.30 set in 1999.
Â
Although she made her biggest splash in the javelin, Sutton also made a little history in the high jump. During the event, she topped 1.58 meters, which equaled the ninth-highest clearance in program history. The Williamsburg native also added the meet's top distance in the long jump after landing a 5.21-meter effort.
Â
Along with Sutton's performance in the javelin, Christopher Newport rewrote the history books in the throwing events on Saturday.
Legend Boyesen came through with a 48.93-meter toss in the hammer, which ranks third on the program's all-time list. Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Hannah Shoemaker added a 42.44-meter throw in the hammer, and
Kayla Brown chipped in with a 39.12-meter performance. Those efforts rank sixth and ninth at CNU, respectively.
Â
Rounding out the historic throwing efforts,
Brendon Burrows moved to seventh in program history in the shot put with a 13.87-meter toss. He and
Sarah Johnson also swept the discus titles on Saturday, and Shoemaker placed first in the women's shot put as well.
Â
Not to be left out, the distance runners also shined during the Duals. In the men's 800,
Jeff Dover won the race in 1:53.87, which places him third on the program's all-time performance list.
Zach Campbell was close behind in 1:54.54, which ranks 10th in CNUÂ history.
Abby Snyder also continued her impressive run in the women's steeplechase this year, finishing the 3000-meter event in 12:14.65, which ranks eighth all-time.
Meanwhile,
Wesley Shrieves also added the fourth-highest clearance at CNU in the high jump on Saturday after winning the event with a 2.01-meter showing.
Â
Among other victorious efforts on the women's side,
Logan Harrington took the 800 in 2:15.16,
Emmie Schmitt won the 1500 in 4:59.60, and
Victoria Neston finished first in the 400 after crossing in 1:02.65. In field events,
Shona Smith captured the triple jump title with a 10.42-meter leap.
Â
On the men's side,
Ryan Scott won the 100 (10.80) and 110-hurdles (14.90). He also ran the anchor leg on the victorious 4x100-relay that finished in 42.19. Meanwhile,
Lewis Folli won the 400-hurdles (1:01.14),
Jordan Roach snatched the long jump (6.40 meters), and
Peyton Artz finished first in the 1500 (4:01.17).
Daniel Cretney also led an impressive pack of distance runners in the steeplechase while capturing the title in 9:53.03.
"We had great conditions for our dual meet with Virginia Wesleyan - a small, keep-things-moving meet and great weather," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "The team brought good energy and focus and that showed in the results."
Overall, Christopher Newport swept the dual meet as the men topped the Marlins, 102-45, and the women won, 82-59.
Â
Christopher Newport will return to action on March 30 for the start of the Colonial Relays at William & Mary.
