LEXINGTON, VA - Christopher Newport's volleyball team went 1-1 on Friday and followed that up with two wins Saturday as they took part in the Washington & Lee Tournament.
The Captains lost their very first match, falling 3-0 to Southwestern (TX) by scores of 30-20, 30-20 and 30-23.
Ellen Koch led CNU with 10 kills. Brittany Collins added 26 assists and 11 digs and Mary Horner added 15 digs.
In match two on Friday, the Captains swept Washington & Lee by scores of 30-26, 30-16 and 30-14. Sarah Hunkele had eight kills with no errors on 12 attempts to finish with a .667 hitting percentage. Collins was 8-for-9 with no errors for a .889 hitting percentage to go along with 28 assists and 13 digs. Allyson Wolfe had 10 kills and 10 digs, Liz Bush finished with nine kills as Christie Kirbie added 13 digs and Sarah Coffey finished with 12 digs.
On Saturday, Christopher Newport defeated McDaniel in three games in their first match of the day. CNU won by scores of 30-20, 30-23, and 30-27.
Bush led the way the Captains with 14 kills. Wolfe added nine kills and 10 digs as Ryann Lowery contributed 20 assists.
The final match of the tournament came against Division II UVA-Wise. The Captains won 3-1 by scores of 30-23, 30-14, 28-30 and 30-11.
Sarah Brown paced Christopher Newport with 14 kills on 22 attempts with no errors for a .636 hitting percentage. Wolfe had a team-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs. Collins and Lowery each finished with 22 assists. Kirbie had four aces and 14 digs. Bush finished with seven block-assists while Meghan Puckli finished with four block solos and six block assists.
Bush and Collins were named to the tournament's All-Tournament Team.
Christopher Newport improves to 4-5 on the year. The Captains return to action Wednesday as they travel to Mary Baldwin to open USA South play. Match time is set for 6:30 pm.
