WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team will look to extend a four-game unbeaten streak when they start a three-game road trip on Wednesday night. The Captains (4-1-3) are headed to Catholic University (5-2-1) for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff at Carlini Field in Washington, D.C.
Live stats will be available alongside a FloCollege video stream ($); links to both can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.Â
The matchup against the Cardinals will be the seventh all-time between the two programs. Christopher Newport owns a 4-2-0 advantage in the series and have won four in a row including a 1-0 win at home last season. It will be just the second trip to D.C. as the Captains lost a 1-0 matchup on September 16, 2012 in the first road game against Catholic.Â
CNU is coming off a scoreless draw against Marymount last week as the Captains defense registered the fifth shutout in the first eight games this season. With senior goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway leading the way, the Captains rank 37th nationally in shutout percentage (.625). Sidaway ranks in the top-30 nationally in minutes played, goals-against average, and save percentage while ranking third in Division III total shutouts, just one off the pace.Â
Offensively, the Captains have featured four different game-winning goal scorers in
Catie Borsuk,
Alessi Carrier,
Ellie Diehl, and
Grace Shifflett. Junior
Ellie Diehl is the lone CNU player with multiple goals this season with two scored in her first seven games played.Â
Catholic has won five of the last six games including a 1-0 victory at Lycoming on Saturday evening. The Cardinals have been led by Caroline Aponte with three goals and one point for seven total points. Tessa Crossed has scored twice with both counting as gamewinners for Catholic while Katie Scully and Emma Antonetti has each added one winner apiece. In goal, Catholic has played two different keepers and both sport sub-1.00 GAA led by Madelyn Catania with a 0.31 mark over 287 minutes.Â
Following the trip to the nation's capital, the Captains will next face Roanoke College on the road on Saturday, October 3 before finishing the road swing at Bridgewater on Saturday, October 17.Â
