ATLANTA, Ga. -- Capping a trip to Atlanta with a 3-1 win at Oglethorpe University on Sunday, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team was led by freshman
Caelyn LaFlamme with a goal and an assist in the win. The Captains improved to 4-1-2 on the season while the Stormy Petrels suffered the team's first loss of the year and are now 2-1-1.
Christopher Newport scored one goal in the first half and added two more in the second with three different goal scorers. LaFlamme notched the first goal of the game in the first half before
Grace Shifflett connected on the eventual game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. Adding an insurance tally in the 82nd minute, LaFlamme and
Nora Cook set up a stunner of a goal by
Ellie Diehl to round out the offensive production.
As a team, the Captains peppered the Oglethorpe defense all day with a dominant 22-3 advantage in total shots. That included a 16-3 advantage in shots on-goal while the Captains also had a decided advantage from the corner spot with six corner kicks taken to none.
The first score of the game came in the 22nd minute on a corner kick when rookies
Catie Borsuk and LaFlamme put CNU ahead, 1-0. Borsuk delivered a ball into the box and LaFlamme finished for her first career goal. Minutes later, CNU senior goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway faced one of the three shots taken and stoned the shot to keep the Captains ahead. CNU got shots on target by
Sarah Ramsey and
Natalie Stern before the teams headed into the intermission.
Coming out of the break, the offensive pressure continued as Christopher Newport ripped three shots on frame and five total in the first five minutes of the half. Breaking through with the pivotal second strike was Shifflett in the 63rd minute after a throw-in. She found the back of the net for her third career goal and her scond gamewinner.
The strike proved imperative because the hosts cut the lead in half in the 74th minute when Myleigh Oglesby snuck in a goal for Oglethorpe on one of just three total attempts in the game.
In the final ten minutes, the CNU offense continued to work for more and was paid off by an incredible blast by
Ellie Diehl. After
Nora Cook played a ball through LaFlamme to the corner for Diehl, the junior had an extremely limited angle for her shot, but pinpointed a rocket over the goalkeeper and into the far pocket despite the tight window. It was Diehl's second goal of the season.
The Captains will look to continue it's positive momentum into the team's next matchup at home on Wednesday, September 23. CNU kicks off at home against Marymount University at 5:00 p.m.
