FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will contend for league supremacy beginning on Friday at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Mary Washington at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
Action gets underway on Friday with the women's pole vault and men's long jump at 3 p.m. Track disciplines start two hours later. On Saturday, field events begin with the men's high jump and women's discus at 11 a.m. The women's 4x100-relay will kick off the running events at 1:30 p.m.

CNU is looking to return to the top of the conference after being unseated by UC Santa Cruz last spring. The women finished second at the 2025 outdoor championships after claiming the previous four titles. Meanwhile, the men came in third last year after winning the crown in 2024.
The Captains will test themselves against competitors from six other schools. In addition to the defending league champions, Johnson & Wales, Mary Washington, Regent, Salisbury, and Warren Wilson will all take part in the meet.
Christopher Newport boasts the top-seeded performer in 11 disciplines. Leading the way,
Kayla Asprey is slotted first in both the women's discus (39.97 meters) and shot put (12.14 meters). In other throwing events,
Rylee Ehrett sits atop the field in the women's hammer throw (47.72 meters), while three men rank first in their respective events. So far this season,
Seth Morris has starred in the hammer (53.44 meters),
Daniel Young has dominated the shot put (16.10 meters), and
Dylan Filipowicz has excelled in the javelin (61.25 meters).
Among other top performers on the men's side,
Trent Snyder boasts the league's highest clearance in the pole vault after topping 4.47 meters, while
Clayton Rankin is seeded first in the 10,000 after posting a time of 31:47.47. Additionally,
Marshall Mattison,
Jahi Jemison,
Tyler Obaugh, and
Miles Allen have the fastest clocking in the 4x100-relay (42.13).
For the women,
Ellie Nuckols is first in the league in the 400-hurdles (1:02.44), and
Ashley Eley has the top effort in the high jump (1.63 meters). Both stars are also former outdoor league champions. Nuckols has swept the 100- and 400-hurdles during each of the last two spring meets, while Eley claimed the high jump crown in 2024.
Christopher Newport is looking to complete a clean sweep in track & field this year after winning both the men's and women's team titles during the indoor league meet in February.
After this weekend, CNU will set its sights on a series of Final Qualifiers while trying to lock up bids to the NCAA Championships, which will take place in La Crosse, Wisconsin beginning on May 21. The Captains will begin their push for the national meet starting at the Widener Final Qualifier on May 11.
