FAIRFAX, Va. -- Piecing together one of the finest outings in program history,
Jahi Jemison vaulted up the all-time leaderboard in the heptathlon while starring for the Christopher Newport track & field program on Saturday during the Patriot Games at the George Mason Field House.
In the combined event, Jemison compiled 4,324 points, which marked the second-highest total in school history. It placed him just behind CNU Hall of Famer Richard Roethel, who won the 2012 national championship in the heptathlon with 5,434 points. At the time, that score set an NCAA record, and it still ranks fifth in Division III history.
During his historic appearance, Jemison won the 60-hurdles with a time of 8.69 while placing second in the 60 (7.07) and fourth in the long jump (6.21 meters). He also came in fifth in four different disciplines. On Saturday, he was fifth in the pole vault (3.04 meters) and 1000 (3:05.87) after matching that finish in the high jump (1.74 meters) and shot put (9.68 meters) on Friday evening.
On a national level, Jemison's heptathlon total moved him to 25th in the NCAA this year.
Along with Jemison, freshman
Sam Anania made his debut in the combined event and moved to 10th on the program's all-time performance list with a score of 3,761. On Saturday, he came in second in the pole vault after eclipsing 4.04 meters. He also placed fourth in the 1000 (3:05.04) and seventh in the 60-hurdles (9.65).
During the first portion of the heptathlon on Friday, Anania added top-10 efforts in all four disciplines. He came in eighth in both the high jump (1.59 meters) and long jump (5.77) while finishing 10th in the 60 (7.70) and shot put (6.26 meters).
In other events on Saturday,
Courtney Mudd made her mark on the history books in the women's mile. During the race, she cut over seven seconds off her previous PR after crossing the line in 5:14.01. That placed her seventh on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.
Rounding out Saturday's competitors,
Ashley Eley was third in the women's triple jump (11.24 meters),
Ellie Nuckols came in seventh in the women's 60-hurdles (9.41), and
Kevin Farnsworth completed the men's mile in 4:40.08.
The Captains will return to action on February 6 with the start of the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
