Marlins Invitational Live Results // Patriot Games Live Results
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- With the squad split between a pair of meets on Friday, the Christopher Newport track & field teams opened up a busy weekend with a slew of victories during the Marlins Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Center while adding a solid performance in the combined events on the opening day of the Patriot Games at the George Mason Field House in Fairfax, Virginia.
At the Marlins Invitational, Christopher Newport posted six wins, including three in the distance events.
Sarah Dake and
Andrew Janetsky swept the 3000 as Dake captured the women's race in 10:26.12, while Janetsky nailed down the men's title in 8:50.97.
Evan Young also topped the field in the men's 5000 after clocking in at 15:27.61.
Later in the day, the women added another track victory after cruising to the top time in the 4x400-relay. Together,
Sydney Chipperfield,
Danielle Hollington,
Sarah Bland, and
Courtney Mudd teamed up to post a win in 4:16.24.
Rounding out the victors,
Trent Snyder won the men's pole vault with a 3.81-meter clearance, while Mikayla Asprey snatched the women's shot put with a 12.51-meter toss. That established a new PR for the first-year phenom and marked the sixth-longest heave in school history.
Adding another historic footnote to Friday's proceedings, Bland jumped to sixth on the program's all-time charts in the 800. During the race, she led all collegiate competitors - and finished second overall - with a mark of 2:19.93. That was the top effort by a Captain since 2016.
Similar to Bland, Hollington also excelled in her individual races on Friday. Along with her work on the victorious relay, the freshman led CNU in both the 200 (26.41) and 400 (59.64). Meanwhile,
D'yan Robinson also had a busy day on the women's side. She finished third overall in the triple jump with an 11.02-meter effort while chipping in with the squad's top effort in both the 60 (8.37) and long jump (4.86 meters).
Among other top performers for the women,
Lily Knowles was the runner-up in the pole vault (2.87 meters),
Katherine Streeter came in second in the 5000 (19:04.93), and
Rylee Ehrett placed fifth in the weight throw (13.86 meters). Rounding out the team-leaders,
Millie Weinhold was sixth in the mile (5:59.80), while
Kendal Brown added a fifth-place mark in the high jump (1.45 meters) to go along with a 13th-place showing in the 60-hurdles (11.24).
The men continued their season-long stardom in the field events. Leading the way in the throws,
Seth Morris came in second in the shot put (15.41 meters) and third in the weight throw (15.57 meters). Meanwhile,
Leo Brennan placed third in the long jump (6.56 meters), and
Noah Cooper finished seventh in the triple jump (13.01 meters).
On the track, the foursome of
Elijah Kakosso,
Miles Allen,
Tyler Obaugh, and
Dylan Defoor completed the 4x400-relay in 3:27.76, which was the second-fastest clocking at the meet. Earlier, Defoor also led Christopher Newport with a time of 22.76 in the 200.
In other races,
Luke Tompkins was fifth in the 800 (1:59.88), while
Darrin Gallegos-Perches added a seventh-place mark in the 60-hurdles after throwing down a team-best time of 8.94 in the prelims. Additionally,
Nick Dunkley wrapped up the 60 in 7.18,
Eli Wilson capped off the 400 in 50.67, and
Taylor Dalton was eighth in the mile after clocking in at 4:47.16.
Along with the stars at the Marlins Invitational, Christopher Newport also had a select group of standouts at the Patriot Games in Fairfax. Competing in the combined events,
Sam Anania,
Jahi Jemison,
Ashley Eley, and
Ellie Nuckols flashed their versatility on Friday.
In the pentathlon, Nuckols jumped into the top-10 nationally this year with a score of 3,223. Capping off the competition in style, she won the 800 in 2:23.23. Earlier, she was also the runner-up in the long jump (5.25 meters) and shot put (9.54 meters), ranked fifth in the 60-hurdles (9.21), and topped 1.34 meters in the high jump.
Equally impressive, Eley established a new PR in the combined event and became just the eighth Captain in school history to eclipse 3,000 points after compiling 3,001 on Friday. Among her highlights, she came in third in the high jump with a 1.61-meter clearance. That equaled the fifth-finest effort in program lore.
Rounding out her day, Eley also came in third in the long jump (5.11 meters) while placing sixth in the shot put (8.39 meters), ninth in the 60-hurdles (9.74), and 11th in the 800 (2:48.57).
Meanwhile, in the heptathlon, Jemison finished the first day of the competition ranked second in the field with 2,533 points, while Anania slotted ninth with 1,908. During the first four disciplines, Jemison was the runner-up in the 60 (7.07), placed fourth in the long jump (6.21 meters), and was fifth in both the high jump (1.74 meters) and shot put (9.68 meters).
During his debut in the combined event, Anania chipped in with four top-10 finishes. He was eighth in the high jump (1.59 meters) and long jump (5.77 meters) while coming in 10th in the 60 (7.70) and shot put (6.26 meters).
The heptathlon will continue on Saturday morning with the final day of action at the Patriot Games.
