SALISBURY, Md. -- Flooding the top of the leaderboard with a series of historic efforts, the Christopher Newport cross country teams placed nine runners in the top-20, including seven during the women's race, as the Captains starred at the Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday at WinterPlace Park in Maryland.
In the 6k, the women notched a score of 55, which placed them second in the field and first among Division III programs.
Sarah Dake and
Kayla Lopez both finished in the top-10 during the race, while five of their teammates added top-20 marks to round out a fantastic team finish.
On the men's side, the Captains came in third overall - and second among Division III teams - in the 8k. Facing a star-studded field, CNU finished one spot behind Division I Navy while topping TCNJ, who entered the meet ranked 28th in the nation.
Headlining the action,
Andrew Janetsky led all Division III runners and placed second overall in the men's half of the meet. The second-year standout completed the 8k in 24:53.30, which shaved nearly a minute off his old PR and marked the eighth-fastest clocking in program history. It also was the top time by a Captain in three years.
The women also rewrote the history books in the 6k. Dake led Christopher Newport with a time of 21:59.10, which placed her third in the race. Calibrated for the length of the course, her adjusted mark of 22:29.10 moved her to 11th on the school's all-time 6k performance list.
Following Dake, Lopez was ninth overall with a raw clocking of 22:40.40. Her adjusted time of 23:10.40 moved her to 27th on CNU's all-time charts. Moments later,
Sarah Bland crossed the line in 13th (22:57.20), while four other Captains followed in a tight pack. Finishing in immediate succession,
Courtney Mudd came in 16th (23:19.40),
Lena Blagg was 17th (23:23.70),
Josie Brumfield finished 18th (23:30.60), and
Lauren Ryan led the squad's freshmen in 19th (23:33.20).
Among the women returning to WinterPlace Park, five threw down course-best marks on Saturday. In addition to Dake, who set an overall PR, the veterans obliterated their efforts from last year's competition. Leading that group, Mudd cut nearly three minutes off her performance from 2024, while Bland dropped her time by almost two minutes. Additionally, Blagg improved by 48 seconds, and Brumfield bested her previous effort by 28 ticks.
On the men's side,
Clayton Rankin joined Janetsky as a top-20 finisher. The junior placed 17th in the 8k with a mark of 26:25.60. Two other Captains also broke the 27-minute barrier as
Kevin Farnsworth was 22nd overall (26:44.60), and
Evan Young finished two spots later (26:47.60). With their work, both Rankin and Farnsworth set new course PRs by nearly two minutes each.
Following the team's top-four finishers,
Luke Tompkins completed the course in 27:05.50, which placed him 26th in the field. Rounding out the top-seven,
Tom Foti was 31st (27:21.40), and
Luca Hinton was 35th (27:41.20).
CNU will return to action on October 3 when the Captains head to Pennsylvania for the prestigious Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.
