CNU Cross Country Heads to Salisbury for Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday Afternoon

Live Results

SALISBURY, Md. --
The Christopher Newport cross country teams will return to action on Saturday when the Captains take part in the Don Cathcart Invitational, which will be hosted by Salisbury at WinterPlace Park in Maryland.

Action gets underway with the women's 6k at 2:30 p.m. before the men head out for the 8k at 3:15 p.m. For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at SUSeaGulls.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Currently, 27 Captains are scheduled to take part in the competition, including 13 who participated in last year's meet. During the 2024 edition of the Don Cathcart Invitational, CNU placed second in both the men's and women's races. However, the action was marred by a course issue, which resulted in a dozen of the top runners getting sent in the wrong direction during the 8k.

Of the returning Captains, five finished in the top-10 during last year's race. For the women, Sarah Dake was fifth (23:48), Josie Brumfield placed sixth (23:58), and Lena Blagg came in 10th (24:11). On the men's side, Taylor Dalton was sixth (28:14), and Clayton Rankin finished seventh (28:22).

Along with last year's standouts, Luke Tompkins and Tom Foti enter the meet with Christopher Newport's top efforts at WinterPlace Park. During the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, Tompkins threw down a time of 26:47 on the course, while Foti crossed the line in 27:39.

CNU enters this year's meet slotted in the top-10 of the latest USTFCCCA South Region Rankings. The women are listed fourth in the most recent poll, while the men are seventh. Both squads have held onto a top-10 position in all three rankings released by the organization this year. The women opened the season slotted sixth before jumping to fourth last week. Meanwhile, the men climbed as high as sixth after starting the fall ranked seventh.

The Captains are coming off of a historic appearance during the CNU Invitational on September 12. The women won their home meet with a score of 37, while the men finished second with 62 points. On an individual level, Dake jumped to 13th in school history in the 6k after completing the race in 22:39.69, which shaved 43 seconds off her previous PR.

On the men's side, Andrew Janetsky set his own personal-best in the 8k with a mark of 25:48.77. That was the 33rd-fastest time in program history and earned him the league's Runner of the Week Award for the second time in his career.

Following their trek to Salisbury, the Captains will continue their fall campaign on October 3 with a trip to Pennsylvania for the prestigious Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.
