Christopher Newport Cross Country to Host CNU Invitational on Friday at Lee Hall Mansion

Live Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
After a record-setting performance in the season opener last month, the Christopher Newport cross country teams will make their first appearance at home this year when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion on Friday evening.

Action gets underway with the men's 8k beginning at 5:30 p.m. The women will hit the course for the 6k starting at 6:20 p.m. For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport will be one of 12 programs with competitors at the meet, including fellow Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference members Regent and Salisbury. Overall, more than 200 student-athletes are slated to take part in the competition, which has been held annually at Lee Hall Mansion since 2012.

Representing CNU, 27 Captains are entered in the meet, including nine who are scheduled to make their home debut.

Among the veterans returning to the course, Sarah Dake had a remarkable appearance during her most recent run at Lee Hall Mansion. During last year's league championships, she established a new PR of 23:22.85, which ranks 31st on the program's all-time 6k performance list.

Equally impressive on the women's side, Kayla Lopez also eclipsed the 24-minute mark on the course after finishing the 2024 CNU Invitational in 23:51.5, which stands 45th in program history. Meanwhile, Courtney Mudd (24:12), Lena Blagg (24:16), Sarah Bland (24:26), and Josie Brumfield (24:26) have all posted sub-25-minute clockings during their work at Lee Hall Mansion.

On the men's side, Clayton Rankin leads the veteran contingent with a course-best time of 26:04 at last year's championship meet. Remarkably, during the same race, Luke Tompkins completed the course just two seconds later, Andrew Janetsky crossed four ticks behind, and Tom Foti finished in 26:27. All four men eventually earned a spot on the All-League squad for their efforts.

Along with the stars at the conference championships, Evan Young also broke the 27-minute mark in the 8k during last year's CNU Invitational. During that race, he set a new course-best after wrapping up the competition in 26:58.

Christopher Newport is looking to build upon a tremendous performance during the season opener last month at the Spider Alumni Open in Mechanicsville, Virginia. During that meet, Janetsky set a new school record in the 6k after finishing in 18:43.2, while Dake established a new 4k mark with a 14:35.1 clocking. For her performance, Dake was named the league's Runner of the Week.

Following their home meet, the Captains will return to action on September 27 when CNU heads to the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Maryland.
