CLINTON, Miss. -- Andrew Janetsky secured All-Region honors, while five other Captains notched top-50 finishes as the Christopher Newport cross country teams shined on Saturday morning during the NCAA South Regional Championships at the Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi.
Leading the way, Janetsky finished 28th in the field - and third among freshmen - after completing the 8k in 26:09.6. With that performance, he became just the 14th freshman in school history to secure All-Region honors and the first to do so since CNU Hall of Famer Grayson Reid came in 31st in 2014. His 28th-place performance was also the ninth-best finish by a first-year competitor at the regional meet in school history and the top mark since Brandon Miles and Cary Chaffee added a pair of top-15 marks in 2003.
Aided by Janetsky's historic showcase, Christopher Newport finished seventh in the men's standings after accumulating a score of 223. Meanwhile, the women came in eighth overall in the 6k, which marked a two-spot improvement from their pre-championship ranking. They eventually finished with 231 points.
Along with Janetsky, two other men placed in the top-50.
Tom Foti was 39th in 26:42.9, while
Taylor Dalton was 43rd in 26:48.6. Rounding out the team's top-five,
Luke Tompkins was 57th (27:15.1), and
Johnny Atienza was 60th (27:24.0).
Among other competitors for CNU,
Clayton Rankin placed 74th in 27:50.1, while
Luke Hawkins was just a step behind in 75th after crossing in 27:50.3.
On the women's side, Christopher Newport also parked three runners in the top-50. Headlining that group,
Lena Blagg finished 36th overall with a time of 23:38.0. That marked her second-fastest clocking of the season and placed her ninth among all freshmen on Saturday.
Along with Blagg,
Sarah Dake finished 40th in 23:46.4, while
Sarah Bland crossed two spots later in 23:51.9. Bland's clocking was the 11th-fastest time among first-year competitors at the meet.
Rounding out the squad's top-five, two veterans made their mark as
Courtney Mudd completed the course in 24:23.2, while
Josie Brumfield clocked in at 24:42.7. That placed them 59th and 66th, respectively. Meanwhile,
Katherine Streeter added a time of 25:12.3, and
Sydney Chipperfield rounded out the team with a 26:52.5 mark.
Overall, the women finished in the top-10 at the regional competition for the 11th straight season, while the men accomplished the feat for the 12th consecutive campaign.
