FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After piecing together a historic debut campaign for the Christopher Newport cross country program, freshman Andrew Janetsy was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year.
With the honor, Janetsky became the 19th Captain in program history to earn the league's Rookie of the Year award and the first since Clark Edwards was recognized in 2018. He also joined Edwards, former All-American J.J. LaPointe (2013), CNU Hall of Famer Grayson Reid (2014), and freshman phenom Zachary Witt (2016) as the only standouts to receive the honor since the program transitioned to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference.
Previously, Janetsky hauled in All-Region accolades and was a second-team All-League selection for his work during the fall campaign.
Wrapping up the year in style, Janetsky was especially impressive during a pair of championship races. At the league meet on November 2, he placed ninth overall and finished first among freshmen after completing the 8k in 26:08.3. Two weeks later, he came in 28th at the NCAA South Regionals after throwing down a mark of 26:09.6. That was also the third-fastest time by a freshman at the competition.
With his performance at the regional meet, Janetsky became just the 14th freshman in school history to secure All-Region honors. His 28th-place finish was also the top performance by a CNU freshman at the NCAA Regionals since 2003.
Along with his work at the championship meets, Janetsky was equally impressive throughout the year. During the Interregional Border Battle on October 19, he established a new personal-best in the 8k after crossing the line in 25:51.4. That time placed him 35th on the program's all-time charts.
He also finished 12th during his 8k debut at the CNU Invitational on September 13 before shining at the Don Cathcart Invitational and Paul Short Run as well.
In addition to his 8k clockings, Janetsky orchestrated an award-winning debut in the 6k at the Spider Alumni Open in August. During that competition, he finished the race in 19:20.5, which was the fourth-fastest time in program lore. For that performance, he was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on September 3, becoming just the third freshman in school history to secure that award.
Aided by Janetsky's efforts, Christopher Newport placed second in the final team standings at the league meet before coming in seventh at the NCAA Regionals.
