GENEVA, Ohio -- Polishing off one of the most decorated tenures in Christopher Newport athletics history, senior star
Katie Stevens hauled in her fifth career All-American citation after starring in the hammer throw on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute.
During the competition, Stevens opened the meet with a 48.80-meter missile on her very first throw. That eventually placed her 16th in the field and earned her a spot on the second-team All-American squad. With that performance, she became the first standout in school history to earn national recognition in the hammer.
Along with Saturday's outing, she was honored as a second-team All-American in the discus on Thursday. With her work during the week, she became the first Captain since CNU Hall of Famer Jeff Dover to earn a pair of national plaudits at a single championship meet. Dover was celebrated in the men's mile and 3000 during the 2018 indoor competition.
Stevens also became the first woman to double-dip at the NCAA Championships since longtime legend Happy Darcus earned All-American nods in the 100 and 200 at the 2005 outdoor meet.
Overall, Stevens concluded her career with five All-American certificates, marking the second-highest total by a thrower in program lore. Only CNU Hall of Famer Claudia Stanley amassed more awards after she garnered seven citations in the shot put from 1984-87.
In addition to her efforts this week, Stevens was previously named a first-team All-American in the discus during the 2024 championships. Meanwhile, she was a two-time second-team selection in the weight throw after excelling at the 2024 and 2025 indoor competitions.
Saturday's outing added a fitting punctuation mark to a fantastic four-year run for Stevens. She capped off her career as a six-time national qualifier after making two appearances apiece in the hammer, discus, and weight throw during her time with the Captains.
Along with her performance at the NCAA Championships, Stevens also set fire to the record books over the past four years. During her tenure, she established new program standards in the weight throw (17.80 meters), discus (48.86 meters), and hammer (52.82 meters). Incredibly, all three of those marks also set new Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference records.
In a class by herself on the league level, the Cary, North Carolina native was an 18-time conference champion. Her 18 individual titles stand as the most by any track & field athlete in the history of the league. Among her highlights, she captured four straight championships in the hammer, becoming just the seventh woman in conference history to win four consecutive crowns in a single event and the first to accomplish that feat in the hammer.
Rounding out her championship history, she was a two-time medalist in the javelin and a three-time winner in the weight throw and discus as well as the indoor and outdoor shot put.
For her efforts, Stevens concluded her career as a 10-time All-Region selection and a 21-time All-Conference performer.
