GENEVA, Ohio --
On the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Christopher Newport standout Katie Stevens earned her fourth career All-American award, while Latrell Fomby also took part in the discus during the national meet on Thursday at the SPIRE Institute.

Headlining the action, Stevens starred in the women's discus. On her third attempt of the meet, the fourth-year phenom fired a 39.62-meter heave. That placed her 16th in the field and earned her a spot on the second-team All-American squad.

Thursday's performance added another chapter to Stevens' storybook career. Previously, she was a first-team All-American in the discus after placing fifth in last year's field. Meanwhile, during the indoor season, she also nabbed a pair of second-team accolades in the weight throw after coming in 12th as a junior and 16th as a senior.

With her fourth All-American certificate, Stevens tied former National Champion Rachael Clark for the second-most honors by a thrower in Christopher Newport history. Only CNU Hall of Famer Claudia Stanley earned more awards after she picked up seven accolades in the shot put from 1984-87.

Along with Stevens, Fomby made his debut on the national stage in the men's discus. During the event, the senior uncorked a 44.17-meter toss on his second attempt of the meet. That placed him 18th in the field and marked the longest throw by a Captain at the NCAA Championships in eight years.

Fomby's performance on Thursday also capped off a sensational senior season. During the spring, he established a new personal-best in the discus with a 51.55-meter launch at the Widener Final Qualifier. That moved him to third on the program's all-time performance list and earned him a spot on the All-Region squad.

In addition to his work in the discus, Fomby also garnered All-South recognition in the hammer and shot put. Meanwhile, during the winter, he was celebrated as the Virginia State Indoor Field Athlete of the Year after ranking first in the region in both the weight throw and shot put.

Christopher Newport will conclude the track & field season on Saturday when Stevens takes part in the hammer throw at 11 a.m.
