SALISBURY, Md. -- Six Captains registered top-10 efforts while leading the Christopher Newport cross country teams to another productive appearance at the 36th Annual Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury's WinterPlace Park.
During the meet, both the men and women placed second in the final team standings. The men compiled a score of 42, while the women added 48 points. Both of those totals trailed the host Sea Gulls, who swept the team titles.
The 8k was marred by a course issue that resulted in a dozen of the meet's top runners getting sent in the wrong direction. Each of those competitors were eventually disqualified, including five Captains. That group included freshman
Andrew Janetsky, juniors
Luke Tompkins and
Tom Foti, and senior
Johnny Atienza, who all registered PRs before the error was noted and their times were dropped.
Among the qualified finishers,
Taylor Dalton led a tight pack of Captains after placing sixth in the field with a time of 28:14.90. Moments later,
Clayton Rankin finished seventh (28:22.30), while
Cohen King was eighth (28:27.20).
Kevin Farnsworth also eclipsed the 29-minute mark after crossing in 28:44.90, which placed him 11th in the field.
Continuing the veteran showcase,
Jason Sangiuliano was 16th in 29:24.30 before two freshmen rounded out the top-seven.
Caiden Aurelio was 17th overall (29:25.20), while
Sam Hubbard was 18th (29:33.10).
In the women's 6k, Christopher Newport parked three runners in the top-10 on Saturday. Leading the way,
Sarah Dake finished fifth in 23:48.50, while
Josie Brumfield was up next in 23:58.40. Brumfield's clocking shaved nearly a minute off her previous course PR of 24:46, which she established at the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
Along with the veteran performers,
Lena Blagg posted the top clocking by a freshman in Saturday's race after finishing 10th overall in 24:11.40. She was closely followed by two other first-year competitors as
Sarah Bland placed 15th (24:44.50), while
Katherine Streeter was 16th (25:01.00).
Rounding out CNU's top-seven,
Courtney Mudd finished 23rd in 26:03.90, while
Sydney Chipperfield was 34th in 27:14.10.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 5 when the Captains head to the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University's Goodman Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
