NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making their first appearance at home this season, several Captains established new PRs while helping the Christopher Newport cross country teams wrap up a solid evening at the CNU Invitational on Friday at Lee Hall Mansion.
On the men's side, eight Captains registered top-50 showings while leading CNU to a third-place finish in the team standings with a score of 99. That also marked the top effort by a Division III program at the meet. Meanwhile, the women came in sixth overall with 130 points as six standouts added top-50 marks.
Leading the way, freshman
Andrew Janetsky made his home debut and placed 12th in the 8k with a time of 26:10.78. That was the fourth-fastest clocking by a Division III runner on Friday. Just 11 seconds later,
Clayton Rankin crossed the line in 26:21.70, which shaved nearly 20 seconds off his previous PR and placed him 15th in the field.
Continuing the veteran contingent,
Tom Foti came in 24th in 26:40.14, while
Evan Young was 29th in 26:58.12. Rounding out the team's top-five,
Johnny Atienza placed 39th with a time of 27:20.52. That sliced 29 seconds off his previous 8k PR.
Among other top performers for the men,
Luke Hawkins was 40th (27:35.49),
Kevin Farnsworth finished 45th (27:57.60), and
Luke Tompkins came in 48th (28:03.16). Farnsworth also established a new personal-best with his effort on Friday.
On the women's side,
Kayla Lopez led the Captains with a time of 23:51.48. That placed her 27th in the field and set a new PR by over 20 seconds. It also made her the 42nd Captain in program history to eclipse the 24-minute mark in the 6k.
Moments later,
Sarah Dake finished 29th in 24:20.00, which cut nearly 30 seconds off her previous course PR.
Courtney Mudd and
Sarah Bland also broke the 25-minute mark after finishing in 24:42.54 and 24:51.69, respectively.
Along with Bland,
Lena Blagg helped headline the team's freshman class after placing 39th in 25:05.77. Meanwhile, veterans
Josie Brumfield and
Didi Dasilva capped off the top-seven. Brumfield established a new course-best with a time of 25:36.10, while Dasilva wrapped up the race in 26:20.41.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 28 when the Captains take part in the Don Cathcart Invitational at Salisbury.
