CHESTER, Pa. -- Headlined by a slew of historic efforts in throwing events, the Christopher Newport track & field teams shined during the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday at the George A. Hansell Track.
During the competition,
Katie Stevens established a new school standard in the discus. The third-year star won the event with a 48.86-meter heave. That shattered former legend Sarah Johnson's previous program mark of 43.94 meters set in 2019. Additionally, it eclipsed the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record, which was also held by Johnson.
Meanwhile, Stevens' performance moved her to fifth on the national charts this year as well.
Four men also climbed up the school's all-time list in the throws.
Tyler Palmer jumped to second in program history in the shot put after unleashing a 15.82-meter toss. That fell less than three feet short of the school standard of 16.47 meters, which Ryan Gordon set in 2008. It also bumped Palmer to 40th in the NCAA this year.
In the discus,
Latrell Fomby moved to 32nd in the country after landing a distance of 49.52 meters. That vaulted him to third in program history as well. Meanwhile,
Ben Varner added his own 45.72-meter effort in the event, which marked the ninth-longest heave by a Captain.
Rounding out the historic throwers,
Dante Ntiganzwa climbed to second in program lore in the hammer (53.25 meters), while
Colin Sliwa jumped to fourth (51.83 meters).
In other field events,
Ainsley Miller won the pole vault with a 3.46-meter clearance. That was the second-finest performance by a Captain, falling just short of Brandy King's 3.66-meter school record in 2004.
Along with the field standouts,
Ellie Nuckols made history in the 400-hurdles. She completed the event in 1:03.49, which marked the fastest time by a Captain since 2012. It also moved her to seventh on the school's all-time charts and launched her to 31st on the national leaderboard this year.
Among other top finishers on Monday,
CJ Reeders came in second in the men's triple jump with a 14.59-meter leap, while
Gary Lane was third with a 14.46-meter mark. On the track,
Daniel Fox was eighth in the 200 (21.85) and ninth in the 100 (10.91), while
Daniel Ferrante added his own ninth-place showing in the 1500 (3:50.30).
Johnny Atienza also threw down the team's finest effort in the 800 (1:55.71), while
Clayton Rankin led the Captains in the 5000 (15:34.51).
On the women's side,
Sydney Trussell came in fifth in the 400 (58.31), while
Alex Guzman was seventh in the triple jump (10.46). In addition to her record-setting performance in the discus, Stevens also placed sixth in the hammer (47.88 meters). Meanwhile, in distance events,
Didi Dasilva completed the 800 in 2:26.60, and

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday for the start of the Mount Union Final Qualifier in Alliance, Ohio.
