VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Headlining a historic afternoon by the Christopher Newport track & field teams,
Dante Ntiganzwa established a new school standard in the weight throw, while
Sydney Trussell broke the conference record in the 200 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Sunday afternoon during the Richard Drake Invitational.
In the men's weight throw, Ntiganzwa pieced together a sensational effort on his final throw of the day. The senior standout unleashed a 17.95-meter heave, which won the event and moved him into the top-20 on the national charts this season. It also broke the previous school record by two feet, topping All-American Legend Hayes' 17.34-meter showcase at the Tufts National Qualifier on March 3, 2018.
Trussell also added her name to the history books after breaking her own Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record in the 200. During the race, she beat the field with a time of 25.52. That marked the third-fastest clocking in school history and the finest performance since Stephanie Andrews threw down a 25.38 mark in 2003. It also set a new indoor league standard, beating her previous PR of 25.53 at the CNU Qualifier on February 26, 2023.
Along with the record-setters, several more Captains added historic efforts on Sunday. In addition to Ntiganzwa, two other standouts moved up the program's all-time charts in the weight throw.
Latrell Fomby climbed to fifth in school history with a 16.51-meter launch, while
Colin Sliwa jumped to 10th with a 14.99-meter toss. Later,
Tyler Palmer leaped to fifth in the shot put with a 14.92-meter throw.
Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Ainsley Miller cleared 3.17 meters in the pole vault. That established a new PR and placed her eighth on the school charts.
While Christopher Newport was rewriting the record books, the Captains were also stockpiling victories during the meet.
Katie Stevens won the women's weight throw (16.00 meters) and shot put (12.31 meters), while the men dominated the distance events.
Evan Young took the mile in 4:23.08, and
Tom Foti snatched the 5000 in 15:43.49. Later,
Wade Dunkelberger capped off the meet with a win in the high jump after topping 2.02 meters.
In other track disciplines,
Adalyn Perez was second in the women's mile (5:22.13) and fifth in the 800 (2:31.72).
Ellie Nuckols also added a mark of 1:01.28 in the 400, and
Sarah Dake was fourth in the 3000 with a 10:48.95 clocking.
In addition to her work on the track, Nuckols eclipsed 1.37 meters in the high jump, which tied
Jessica Hendricks for the sixth-highest clearance at the meet.
Alex Guzman also came in third in the triple jump (10.50 meters) and ninth in the long jump (4.75 meters).
For the men,
CJ Reeders added a pair of top-five finishes after placing second in the triple jump (13.92 meters) and fourth in the long jump (6.61 meters).
On the track,
Luke Tompkins was second in the 800 (1:58.95),
Daniel Fox came in fourth in the 60 (7.02), and
Taylor Dalton finished seventh in the 3000 (9:16.67). Among other top performers,
Ben Hager completed the 200 in 22.82,
Logan Pena-Bandalo wrapped up the 60-hurdles in 10.71, and
Matthew Ryan ran the 400 in 52.68. Hager,
Eli Wilson,
Marshall Mattison, and
David Keroack also chipped in with a fourth-place showing in the 4x400-relay after crossing the line in 3:26.16.
Christopher Newport will return to action on February 16 for the start of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held at the Freeman Center.
