FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Eliza Dana and
Ashley Eley swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, while
Wade Dunkelberger was celebrated on the men's side after the three standouts starred for Christopher Newport at the Camel City Invitational over the weekend.
Dana and Eley earned the weekly recognition for the first time in their careers, while Dunkelberger was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the second time.
Helping headline a record-setting performance on Friday, Dana anchored the women's Distance Medley Relay, which finished in 12:36.75 at the JDL Fast Track. That clocking shaved over two seconds off the previous league standard of 12:39.42, which was set by CNU's Briana Stewart, Jennifer Westerholm, Abigail May, and Logan Harrington in 2016. It also established a new school record.
For her part on the relay, Dana completed the final 1600 meters in 5:21.06, which helped the foursome vault to fourth on the national charts this year. On Saturday, she came back and threw down a 10:38.35 clocking in the 3000. That bumped her to 10th on CNU's all-time performance list and marked the fastest time in the league this year by 15 seconds.
Equally impressive in field events, Eley excelled in a pair of jumps during the Camel City Invitational. Kicking off her week, she eclipsed 1.55 meters in the high jump. That led all Division III competitors at the meet and marked the second-highest clearance in the league this year. It trailed only her own 1.56-meter jump last month at the Holiday Open.
On Saturday, the freshman phenom came back and set a new personal-best in the triple jump with a 10.72-meter leap. Once again, that was the top effort by a Division III competitor at the meet. It also moved her to 10th on the NCAA South Regional leaderboard this year.
Continuing his award-winning run, Dunkelberger starred in the high jump on Friday. During the meet, he topped 2.00 meters, which placed him third in the field, second among collegiate competitors, and first among Division III entrants. It also marked the second-highest clearance in the league this year, trailing only his own 2.03-meter effort last week at the Oceanfront Invitational.
Overall, Dunkelberger remains the only athlete in the conference to clear 2.00 meters since 2019. He is also one of just 13 standouts in the NCAA to eclipse that height at least twice this year. He currently ranks eighth on the national charts in 2024.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday for the start of the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington, Virginia.
