PENN LAIRD, Va. -- Sarah Dake,
D'yan Robinson, and
Ben Varner all walked away with victories, while several other Captains established new PRs as the Christopher Newport track & field teams concluded the Shane Stevens Invitational on Saturday at the Rockingham Recreation Center.
Dake headlined the victors after claiming a pair of wins during the competition. In the mile, she crossed the line in 5:16.45, which marked the eighth-fastest clocking in program history. Later, she also took the 800 in 2:26.60. That established a new PR as well.
Along with Dake, Robinson notched a win in the triple jump. She topped the field after landing a distance of 10.42 meters, which beat the second-place finisher by over a foot. Meanwhile, Varner captured the men's weight throw with a 15.05-meter heave.
Also making some history on Saturday, freshman
Kayla Asprey was second in the shot put with an 11.80-meter launch. Not only did that tack nearly a foot onto her previous PR, but it also marked the ninth-longest toss in school lore.
In other events on the women's side,
Danielle Hollington was the runner-up in the 400 (1:00.17), while fellow freshman
Lana Sakhel placed fourth (1:04.07). Later,
Annaka Busenlehner led the Captains with a sixth-place mark in the 200 (28.53), and
Charlotte Waldemar set a personal-best in the weight throw after coming in fifth with a12.35-meter missile.
On the men's side,
Luke Tompkins led all collegiate competitors in the mile after wrapping up the race in 4:28.15. He also added a ninth-place finish in the 800 (2:05.75). In shorter distances, the Captains parked three runners in the top-five of the 400.
Eli Wilson was second (51.47),
Elijah Kakosso came in third (52.55), and
Noah Cooper finished fourth (52.73). Fittingly, all three standouts won their heat during the meet.
Rounding out the squad's top performers,
Leo Brennan was the runner-up in the triple jump with a 12.80-meter distance, and Varner came in third in the shot put with a 13.70-meter showcase. Following his work in the 400, Wilson also finished seventh in the 200 with a 23.05 clocking.
Christopher Newport will return to action next week with a pair of meets. The Captains will take part in both the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Friday and the Patriot Games on Friday and Saturday.
