FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After starring for Christopher Newport during the VMI Team Challenge on Saturday,
Ashley Eley and
Ellie Nuckols swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors, which were announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Eley was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after she was previously recognized on December 8. Overall, she has received the award five times in her career. Meanwhile, Nuckols was named the Track Athlete of the Week, marking her sixth weekly award since arriving at CNU.
Building upon her award-winning season debut last month, Eley was equally impressive in her second outing of the year on Saturday. During the VMI Team Challenge, the junior juggernaut vaulted into the top-15 nationally in the triple jump. Finishing first among Division III athletes at the meet, she landed a distance of 11.39 meters. That marked the 11th-longest leap in the NCAA this year and the finest showing by a conference competitor.
Along with solidifying her spot among the top performers in the nation, Eley's effort on Saturday marked the third-longest jump of her career. Meanwhile, she also sits in the top-50 nationally in the high jump after eclipsing 1.59 meters during the Holiday Open in December.
Making her first appearance of the season, Nuckols kicked off her junior campaign with an electric effort over the weekend. On the track, she topped all Division III competitors in the 400 after cruising to a time of 58.82. That not only established a new indoor PR for the third-year sensation, but it also moved her to 36th on the national leaderboard. Additionally, her clocking was the fastest by a league competitor this year by nearly a full second.
In addition to her decorated performance in the 400, Nuckols also flashed her versatility with an appearance in the long jump. During that event, she matched her indoor PR with a 5.43-meter showcase, which placed her 30th on the NCAA charts.
The track & field teams will return to action on Saturday when the Captains travel to the Shane Stevens Invitational in Penn Laird, Virginia.
