BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships,
CJ Reeders picked up All-American accolades in the triple jump after headlining Christopher Newport's efforts on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama.
Entering the meet seeded 20th in the nation, Reeders blew right past that mark while making history in the triple jump. The fourth-year phenom landed a distance of 14.82 meters on his second attempt. That not only placed him eighth in the star-studded field on Saturday, but it also marked the fourth-longest jump in program history.
In addition to moving him up the school's all-time performance list, Reeders' showcase on Saturday marked the top leap by a Captain at the NCAA Indoor Championships in program history. It eclipsed the previous mark of 14.77 meters, which was set by Isaac Bell during his second-place finish in 2009.
Consistent throughout the day, Reeders topped his previous PR on five of his six attempts during the national meet. Along with his historic showing, he opened the day with a 14.61-meter effort on his very first jump and added a 14.64-meter performance on his fifth venture down the runway.
All of those marks shattered his previous indoor personal-best of 14.39 meters, which he set at the Richard Drake Invitational on February 5.
Overall, Reeders became the eighth Captain in program history to earn All-American honors in the men's indoor triple jump. Coupled with his seventh-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, he also became the seventh standout in school history to receive national plaudits in the event during both the winter and spring campaigns.
Along with Reeders,
Wade Dunkelberger wrapped up the indoor season on Saturday. Taking part in the high jump, he cleared 1.93 meters, which placed him 19th in the country. That marked the top effort by a Captain at the NCAA meet since Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Richard Roethel eclipsed 2.08 meters in 2012.
Dunkelberger's work on Saturday capped off a storybook season for the first-year standout. Less than one month ago, he made his collegiate debut while winning the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship with a 1.96-meter clearance on February 17.
After claiming the league title, Dunkelberger made just two more appearances before Saturday, including a win at the South Region Final Qualifier on March 4. During that meet, he cleared 2.03 meters, which set a new PR and matched the third-best clearance in program history.
Along with Reeders and Dunkelberger,
Alyssa Roach excelled at the national meet on Friday. The senior star hauled in All-American accolades in the women's long jump after placing eighth with a 5.57-meter effort. She also came in 14th in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,330.
