Christopher Newport Track & Field Sweeps Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Dominating the competition throughout the two-day meet, the Christopher Newport track & field program swept the team crowns and captured 16 total league titles while polishing off the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

Defending their league title, the women posted a score of 193, which out-distanced UC Santa Cruz by 46. Meanwhile, the men also returned to the top of the conference after posting 153 points. The Banana Slugs were second with 140.

Meanwhile, on an individual level, Katie Stevens was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet after starring in the throwing events. Alyssa Roach also orchestrated a fantastic weekend as the senior star amassed 28 points by herself, marking the highest total of any athlete at the championship meet.

"I was really pleased with how the team performed from the very first effort of the weekend," said head coach Tyler Wingard. "Coming into the meet, we talked about the importance of setting the tone early. We did just that and kept the pressure on throughout. Santa Cruz has a tough squad, and they don't get many indoor opportunities to show it, so they were a real wildcard. Fortunately, we had the depth and strength to hold them off."

Wrapping up her award-winning weekend, Stevens captured the shot put with an 11.57-meter toss on Saturday. That allowed her to sweep the throwing events during the meet after setting a new school-record in the weight throw on Friday with a 15.42-meter heave.

Along with Stevens, Saturday's action was headlined by the sprinters. Sydney Trussell snatched three titles. On an individual level, the sophomore won the 60 in 7.90 and the 200 in 26.09. Later, she teamed up with Casey Yenyo, Ainsley Miller, and Adrianna DeSantis on a victory in the 4x400-relay with a 4:09.29 mark.

In addition to her work on the relay, DeSantis also took the 400 in 59.93 and placed third in the 200 (26.91). Roach also locked down the women's 60-hurdles with a 9.24 clocking. Meanwhile, on the men's side, Daniel Fox won the 60 in 6.96 and the 200 in 22.39.

In field events, Christopher Newport collected three other titles on Saturday. Tyler Palmer won the men's shot put with a 14.42-meter launch, which marked the seventh-best effort in program history. CJ Reeders also claimed the men's triple jump (13.85 meters), while freshman Avery Mangels topped the competition in the women's pole vault after eclipsing 2.99 meters.

Joining the conference champions, several Captains also hauled in All-League accolades with second-place efforts on Saturday. Cooper Albright was the runner-up in the men's 800 (1:56.25), while Mae Savoie was second in the women's 3000 (10:44.98). Additionally, in women's field events, Roach came in second in the high jump (1.48 meters), Annabelle Dreher trailed Stevens in the shot put (10.39 meters), and Alex Guzman was the runner-up in the triple jump (9.88 meters).

Among other top performers on the women's side, Yenyo was third in the 800 (2:28.75), Savoie came in third in the mile (5:21.18), and Madi Rawlings matched that finish in the 3000 (10:47.79). Additionally, Lindsey Stirling was third in the 60 (8.17), and Miller added the same showing in the pole vault (2.89 meters).

For the men, Luke Tompkins was third in the mile (4:29.45), John Vogel was fourth in the 3000 (8:49.74), and Ethan Bower placed fifth in the 60-hurdles (9.42). Gage Elliott also came in fourth in the 400 (51.96) before joining forces with Albright, John Laser, and Perry Spring on a third-place showing in the 4x400-relay (3:28.20).

With the league meet in the books, Christopher Newport will return to action on February 25 with the start of the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events at the Freeman Center.
