MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams pieced together several historic efforts while kicking off the 2022 campaign in fine fashion as the Captains excelled at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday morning at Pole Green Park.
During the competition,
Mae Savoie added a new program record in the women's 4k after crossing the line in 15:06.1. That shaved 16 seconds off the previous standard of 15:22, which was set by Jade Zaharoff at the Virginia Wesleyan Dual Meet on September 1, 2011. Savoie's clocking also sliced over 80 seconds off her previous PR of 16:29.7, which she established as a freshman at the 2019 UMW Opener.
Meanwhile, on the men's side,
John Vogel and
Nathanael Ferrante added two of the school's finest marks in the 6k. Vogel finished in 19:14.3, which marked the third-fastest time by a Captain since 2007. Moments later, Ferrante crossed in 19:22.0, which equaled the fourth-best mark during that same span.
Overall, the men's team finished seventh in the 6k after accumulating a score of 186, while the women came in eighth in the 4k with 256 points. Both of those totals were the top marks by a Division III program at the star-studded competition.
Following Savoie,
Eliza Dana added the meet's second-best time by a Division III standout after finishing in 15:34.0, while
Megan Smith finished third in that category after throwing down a mark of 15:42.6 in her collegiate debut. Rounding out the squad's top-five,
Lex McGrail was fourth on the team (15:53.8), and
Sarah Kinka was fifth (15:56.2).
Overall, seven total Captains broke the 16-minute barrier as
Alli Malmquist clocked in at 15:58.0, and
Adalyn Perez crossed the line in 15:59.1.
On the men's side, Vogel and Ferrante were followed closely by
Nick Tolarchyk, who finished 48th overall - and fifth among Division III competitors - with a time of 19:55.3. That cut over a full minute off his previous 6k best of 20:57.6, which he established at the William & Mary Invitational in 2019.
Joining the squad's top-five,
Luke Hawkins also broke the 20-minute mark with a time of 19:58.7, while freshman
Taylor Dalton opened his collegiate career in 21:01.2.
Johnny Atienza (21:26.9) and
Luke Tompkins (21:38.5) also placed in the top-80 during the meet, which was littered with Division I standouts.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 16 when the Captains host the NCAA South Regional Preview at Lee Hall Mansion.
