PARAMUS, N.J. -- An electric run on the back nine positioned Christopher Newport rising senior
Alex Price (+2) for a top-25 finish after two rounds of stroke play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur hosted by The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. Facing a field of over 300 of the most talented amateur players from around the world, Price advanced to match play with the rest of the top 64 finishers and will take the course again on Wednesday.
Price continues to make history for Christopher Newport golf and will be the only Division III golfer competing in match play during the 122nd Annual U.S. Amateur.
Starting on the ninth hole of the Ridgewood CC layout that played just over 7,400 yards as a Par 71, Price put together one of the finest stretches in the tournament. Over his first ten holes, the Hillsboro, Va. native had birdied four holes and added five pars with just one bogey. Shooting up the leaderboard with most of the field finishing ahead of him, Price was able to coast into a qualifying position on the front nine, finishing with an Even par 71.
The left-handed swinger added one more birdie on the front nine, sinking a three on the 491-yard Par 4 fourth hole, picking up his ninth hole under par in the first two rounds. In the prestigious field of 312 golfers, Price was one of only seven players with at least nine birdies through the 36 holes of stroke play. He has tied for the third most birdies in the tournament so far.
After firing a two-over par 72 on the first day, Price signed for an Even par 71 on day two to finish stroke play at 143 (+2), tied for 21st on the leaderboard. Nine players came in at 143 after playing 18 holes at Ridgewood and 18 on the Arcola Country Club course over the first two days. Now, the remaining 64 players will advance to a bracket-style match play tournament over the next five days to crown the 122nd annual U.S. Amateur Champion.
The remaining play will be televised on Peacock and the Golf Channel throughout the week. On Wednesday, Peacock will broadcast action from 3:00-4:00 p.m. with Golf Channel taking over from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Tickets remain for fans attending in person, with gates open at the Ridgewood CC at 6:00 a.m. The Round of 64 tee times will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will continue through a 2:10 p.m. start on Wednesday.
