DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- Christopher Newport sophomore
Patrick O'Rourke made program history on Monday afternoon as he put together one of the finest single round performances ever with a seven-under 64 in the opening round of the West Pines Collegiate. O'Rourke tied the program record for total strokes and in relation to par with his first round effort and wrapped up the 36-hole first day in second place at eight-under par.
As a team, the Captains (-8) are in second place behind tournament host Oglethorpe University (-23) after firing a five-under first round and adding a three-under performance in the second round. CNU signed for a 560 (279-281) on day one and will look to continue it's strong play in Tuesday's third and final round.
The headline of the day came from O'Rourke, who shattered his personal low with a 64 to become just the third player ever to fire a round that low. He joins CNU Athletics Hall of Famer David Rabil (Oct. 10, 2016 in the 2nd round of the Golfweek Invitational) and Matt DiSalvo (Apr. 18, 2015 in the 1st round of the CAC Championship) on the overall scoring chart while matching Rabil's seven-under relative to par. Both of O'Rourke and Rabil's rounds were played on a Par 71 track.
The sophomore from Chantilly, Va. started his round on hole No. 7 and raced out to a quick start with a birdie-birdie-birdie opening. His three straight birdies kickstarted a dominant 12-hole burst that included four birdies and an eagle three on the 530-yard par five 17th hole. His only hiccup came on the first hole with a bogey that he immediately erased with another birdie on the second. He closed as strong as he finished with three pars and two birdies over his final five holes.
Signing for the record-tying performance saw him sitting at the top of the leaderboard through 18 holes. In the second round, O'Rourke was one-under with a 70 and maintained a spot in second place with an eight-under 134 (64-70).
Not far behind was junior
Jacob Foti (-6) after carding a pair of sub-70 rounds in the first 36 holes with a 136 (67-69). Foti is tied for third after recording his team-leading fourth and fifth rounds under par this season. He dropped in nine birdies in the first 36 holes while also adding 24 pars.
Rounding out a trio of CNU players under par after two rounds was
Fischer Leggitt (-1). The sophomore signed for a career-low 68 (-3) in the second round after sinking five birdies and 11 pars to climb into a tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard.
J.P. Carr added his first round effort with a four-over 75 and
Christian Martin chipped in a three-over 74 in the second round.
The Captains will return to the course on Tuesday to close out the 54-hole tournament. Live scoring is available on Scoreboard with a link found on CNUsports.com.
