HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Eight members of the Christopher Newport men's track & field program secured All-State honors, while John Vogel was celebrated as the Virginia Track Rookie of the Year and Jack Armel hauled in a pair of awards, which were announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Tuesday afternoon.

Capping off an incredible debut campaign, Vogel was named the Outdoor Track Rookie of the Year after previously earning the indoor honor during the winter season. Additionally, he secured second-team All-State nods for his work in the distance events.

Along with the first-year phenom, Armel garnered first-team All-State accolades in the combined events and was a second-team selection in the jumps. CJ Reeders also earned a spot on the second-team squad for his work as a jumper, while Joe Kilama, Tyler Palmer, and Amir Siders all picked up second-team recognition in the throwing events.

Rounding out the men's honorees, Nick Tolarchyk was honored alongside Vogel in the distance events, and Daniel Ferrante was named to the team in the mid-distance category.

During the spring, Vogel dominated in the distance events. Lighting up the track, he earned All-Region accolades in three different disciplines. He ranked fourth in the South in the 3000-steeplechase after posting a time of 9:14.63 at the Virginia Grand Prix, which marked the second-fastest clocking in school history. He also slotted fifth in the region and fourth on the program's all-time charts in both the 1500 (3:50.47) and 5000 (14:45.57).

Along with his All-State and All-Region awards, Vogel also collected second-team All-League plaudits for his work in the 1500 and 5000 at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Flashing his versatility in the spring, Armel slotted second in the South Region in the decathlon after posting a season-best mark of 5,497 during the New Captains Classic. Along with his collective work in the combined event, the junior star was especially effective in the pole vault. He eclipsed 4.56 meters at the MIT Final Qualifier. That not only established a new PR, but it equaled the fifth-highest clearance in program history and the top mark by a Captain since 2017.

For his efforts, Vogel secured All-Region accolades in both the decathlon and pole vault. He also nabbed second-team All-Conference nods in the pole vault and javelin.

Torching the competition in the mid-distance events, Ferrante walked away with a pair of league titles during the spring. The second-year speedster snatched crowns in the 800 and 1500, becoming the first Captain to win two distance events at the outdoor meet since 2011. He also earned All-Region nods in the latter discipline after ranking third in the South with a 3:49.28 clocking at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier.

Making his mark in the throws, Kilama orchestrated an award-winning junior campaign. In the discus, he picked up All-Region nods after establishing a PR of 43.78 meters at the Eastern Shore Challenge. Equally effective in the hammer, he garnered a second-team All-League citation after finishing as the runner-up in the event with a 47.40-meter toss at the Coast-to-Coast Championships.

Just as successful in the throwing events, Palmer made a name for himself in the shot put. During his second season at Christopher Newport, he earned a spot on the All-Region squad after establishing a new PR with a 14.26-meter launch at the MIT Final Qualifier. That award-winning throw also moved him to ninth on the school's all-time performance list and was the top mark by a Captain since 2018.

One of the nation's elite triple jumpers, Reeders continued to star in the event during his third year with the Captains. At the Williams Final Qualifier, he won the competition with a season-best mark of 14.59 meters. That effort placed him 23rd in the country and fourth in the South Region. Additionally, he hauled in a league title during the spring after guiding the 4x100-relay to a conference crown in 42.31.

Putting on a show in the throwing events, Siders finished in the top-five in three disciplines during the Coast-to-Coast Championships in the spring. Stockpiling points during the competition, he earned All-League nods after finishing second in the discus with a 41.42-meter heave. Along with his decorated performance, he also came in third in the shot put and fourth in the hammer during the outdoor meet.

Polishing off his senior campaign with a title-winning showcase, Tolarchyk ran away with the league crown in the 3000-steeplechase. The fourth-year standout beat the competition while setting a personal-best with a 9:37.57 mark at TowneBank Stadium. That effort not only placed him seventh in the South Region in 2022, but it also vaulted him to 10th on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.

Aided by the eight All-State honorees, Christopher Newport captured the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship with a score of 208. That marked the third-highest total by any team in the league since 2013.
