CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- John Vogel won the 3000-steeplechase, while
Daniel Ferrante starred in the 1500 as the two standouts represented the Christopher Newport track & field program at the Virginia Grand Prix on Sunday evening at Virginia's Lannigan Field.
In the steeplechase, Vogel threw down the meet's top clocking after crossing the line in 9:14.63. That marked the second-fastest time in program history, falling just shy of David Woodson's school record of 9:10.26 set in 2010. It also shaved over five seconds off his previous PR, which he established in March at the Colonial Relays.
Along with placing him among the top legends in program history, Vogel's clocking also pushed him to 16th on the national leaderboard. Additionally, his time ranks first in the conference and third in the South Region this year.
Following Vogel's showcase in the steeplechase, Ferrante lit up the track in the 1500. During the competition, he finished in 3:50.09, which moved him to second on the program's all-time performance list. It also placed him first among Division III competitors on Sunday and 10th overall in a field overflowing with Division I standouts.
Entering the weekend, Ferrante's time also ranks 21st in the NCAA, third in the South Region, and first in the conference.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday for the start of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at TowneBank Stadium.
