Day 1 Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Piecing together a slew of impressive efforts on the opening day of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Christopher Newport walked away with four individual titles, while five Captains added their names to the history books on Friday at the Freeman Center.
"It was a really good start for us," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose student-athletes combined for 21 PRs on Friday. "The performances have been really good so far, and as a result, the team scoring is a little ahead of where we were seeded. There's been good energy all around, so hopefully we can build on that tomorrow!"
Through the first six events on the women's side, the Captains sit atop the standings with 73 points. Salisbury is currently second with 48. Meanwhile, the men have competed in four events with Christopher Newport compiling 57 points - 20 more than second-place Salisbury.
On an individual level, the Captains rewrote the record books in the weight throw.
Mazie Clark walked away with the women's title after unloading a 13.51-meter toss, which ranks seventh in school history.
Katie Stevens also came in second in the event with a 13.46-meter heave. That places her eighth in program lore.
Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Joe Kilama was the runner-up in the weight throw. He posted a distance of 15.49 meters, which bumped him to fifth on the school's all-time charts.
Also making history on Friday,
Peyton Blanding and
Ainsley Miller shined in the women's pole vault. Blanding won the event after topping 3.35 meters, which equaled the fourth-highest mark in program history. Miller followed with a 3.09-meter clearance. That placed her second in the league and eighth in school lore.
Rounding out the conference champions,
Alyssa Roach claimed the women's long jump with a 5.18-meter leap, while
John Vogel snatched the men's 5000 after crossing the line in 15:38.85.
Eric Speeney also came in second in the 5000 with a 15:40.04 clocking, while
Madi Rawlings was the runner-up in the women's event after finishing in 19:00.08.
Among other top performers on Friday,
CJ Reeders was second in the long jump (6.65 meters), and Roach was fourth in the high jump (1.48 meters). Christopher Newport also finished second in both DMRs.
Mae Savoie,
Callie Pratt,
Casey Yenyo, and
Kaitlyn Ardrey teamed up for a 12:49.61 clocking on the women's side, while
Logan McCue,
Gage Elliott,
Cooper Albright, and
Clark Edwards wrapped up the men's event in 10:49.05.
In addition to the finals on Friday, the Captains also looked sharp in several prelims. Roach notched the top qualifying time in the 60-hurdles after finishing in 9.29. Meanwhile,
Lindsey Stirling was second in the prelims of the women's 60 (8.24), while
Philip Burrell was second after the opening round of the men's 60-hurdles (9.14).
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday with the final day of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
