Alex Price and
Robb Kinder led the nationally-ranked Captains finish at the NCAA DIII Championship Preview on Tuesday afternoon. Kinder made the third largest leap amongst the 122-player field in the third round, climbing 30 spots into a tie for 38th with a two-under par 70.
While Kinder pieced together an exceptional round to finish at six-over with a 222 (77-75-70), his classmate did him one better and carded a three-under 69 in the final round. Both Kinder and Price matched the second lowest scoring rounds of their career with the under par performances.
Both players finished with six birdies on the final day while Price added five pars while staying out of trouble with just three bogeys.
Price tied for the second lowest third round of the tournament and was a top-15 showing among the 366 total rounds played by the 122-player field. With the impressive finish, Price vaulted 23 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 12th with an Even Par 216 (73-74-69).
As a team, Kinder and Price held the Captains at 18th to lead CNU to a 300 on day three. The third round team score matched their tournament-best in the opening round and CNU finished with a 904 (300-304-300).
Carrter Morris wrapped up a consistent 54-hole showing with a 235 (77-79-79) to haul in the Captains' third best score on Tuesday. He finished tied for 10th after dropping in two more birdies. Rookie
Owen Cook tied for 97th with a 234 (74-76-84) and
Aidan Baron finished tied for 111th with a 238 (76-80-82).
Overall, the Captains were among the best on the short holes, ranking tied for seventh with a 3.15 average on the Par 3's. Price led the way tied for the individual lead, averaging 2.83 strokes for a -2 score. CNU carded the sixth most birdies over the three-day event with Price (12), Kinder (11), Morris and Cook (9) leading the way.
Methodist won the event after leading wire-to-wire and finished five strokes ahead of second-place Emory University. The Monarchs Andre Chi captured individual medalist honors by two strokes ahead of Huntingdon's Ethan Unverzagt.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 10-11 as they play at the Tartan Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon in Ligonier, Pa.
